Job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic, caring and engaging Class Teacher to join the teaching team at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School and Nursery. 

A Class Teacher at the Edinburgh Academy Junior School has responsibility for all core academic subjects, although we set for Maths from Primary 4.  There is specialised teaching in Games, Art, Modern Foreign Languages, PE, Science and Music.  The current Junior School timetable is based on 45-minute periods.

The Junior School and Nursery sits in its own self-contained campus in leafy Inverleith next to the Botanic Gardens providing the ideal environment for our youngest learners.  In addition to the specialist provision above, our Class Teachers work alongside Outdoor Learning experts to take education outside, bolstering resilience and wellbeing, allowing their imagination to run wild.

Main ResponsibilitiesAs a Class Teacher, you will be expected to:


Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where all pupils feel valued, respected and safe
Take responsibility for providing a suitably differentiated curriculum accessible to all children
Take account of pupils’ opinions about their own learning and wellbeing
Assess pupil progress through a range of formative and summative assessment strategies, providing constructive feedback to support their development
Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external stakeholders to promote effective communication in support of pupils’ learning and wellbeing
Implement school policies and procedures including those related to positive behaviour, safeguarding, and equality, diversity and inclusion
Demonstrate a commitment to professional learning in line with GTCS requirements


Class teachers are also expected to:


Perform two 20 minute break time playground supervisions per week.
Be in school by at least 8.15am and ready to welcome your class at 8.25am
Accompany your class to lunch each day and sit with them during the meal
Be available for all staff meetings and professional learning events which includes all inservice days throughout the year
Commit to and participate in the co-curricular programme as set out in the staff handbook
Carry out any reasonable additions to this list as deemed necessary by the Headteacher

Have or be eligible to have full registration with the GTCS
Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with children, colleagues and parents

Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional learning
Be flexible, adaptable and willing to embrace new ideas and approaches to learning and teaching

Have a child-centred approach to learning and teaching which focuses on the holistic development of each child, recognising and nurturing their individual strengths, interests and potential
Show commitment to the co-curricular programme at The Edinburgh Academy

About the school/organisationThe Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
