About the role

We are seeking an experienced Underwriter to join our Head Office function in Stratford-upon-Avon. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an evolving underwriting team within a reputable and stable organisation, to work in an environment that will broaden your skillset, and which will enable you to make a difference by helping to shape our underwriting approach.


Working within the Head Office Line of Business Underwriting Team, which has responsibility for all motor classes, you will be part of the team which determines our underwriting strategy and the rules, processes and communications required to execute it effectively.


Primarily focusing on our Car and Commercial Vehicle lines, you’ll be involved in working alongside colleagues to manage our underwriting performance at Line of Business level, setting risk appetite and strategy for our motor lines, contributing your underwriting knowledge into our pricing and ensuring technical guidance and policy wordings accurately reflect our risk appetite and intent.   You’ll also be providing guidance and building and maintaining relationships with Pricing, Sales, Agency, Claims, Product Propositions, Regions, Agents, Marketing and industry bodies to ensure the effective application of underwriting expertise.  And working on major change projects, including the development of our new policy admin system.

About you

We are seeking an experienced and driven general insurance professional with a proven strong technical Underwriting background, including experience in Motor Underwriting. Prior experience of working in a team directly accountable for the development of underwriting strategy, risk appetite and managing account performance is desirable.


This role will include lots of interaction across different areas of the business, so it is important that you are able to demonstrate strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability and confidence to influence and challenge when necessary and to recommend and implement change. You’ll also have:



  • Experience translating underwriting appetite into clear and practical rules and processes

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong decision-making and critical thinking skills

  • Proven collaboration skills

  • Data proficiency


Experience in project or change management would be beneficial but is not essential.
