Job description

Position: Standards Performance Lead - SBTi

The Opportunity at SBTi: The SBTi has enabled thousands of companies and financial institutions (FIs) to set climate targets and have these targets validated in line with science. It is now essential that these companies are held accountable for delivering on their targets.

The SBTi is researching how companies achieve their targets, in order to determine the parameters that must be considered for robust reporting and assessment of target progress and delivery, as well as for substantiating claims of target achievement.

The Performance Lead will take ownership for incorporating the findings from this research into revisions to the Corporate Net-Zero Standard. By increasing the transparency of private sector climate action through enhanced Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) requirements, the SBTi will bring further transparency to the progress made towards science-based targets. To enable assessment of achievement of targets, the SBTi will develop and incorporate Performance criteria that will define the allowable approaches companies can take to achieve decarbonization. These criteria will also define how companies recalibrate and iterate their near-term science-based targets.

For more information on the project, see here.

This is an exciting new role to provide direction to the revisions of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard, taking accountability for the MRV and Performance workstreams. You will sit in the Standards Team, but work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Research Team.

Role Overview: We're seeking a visionary Performance Lead to steer our MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) and Performance workstreams. This role is integral to evolving our standards from setting ambitious targets to establishing a framework that rigorously assesses performance against these goals.] The right person will focus on two main areas:

  1. Measurement and reporting of target progress: Dedicated to understanding how companies account for and disclose progress against targets in a robust, transparent and consistent manner. This involves identifying the key factors that need to be standardized to ensure consistency in the way companies measure and report progress against targets, considering decarbonization vis-a-vis other factors that lead to a change in estimated and reported emissions including structural, methodological or data variations.
  2. Target performance: Dedicated to exploring the types of interventions that can enable entities to make credible decarbonization claims across different activities and emission sources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the MRV and Performance workstreams, ensuring comprehensive integration of research into SBTi standards.
  • Collaborate closely with our Research Team, transforming complex data into actionable standards.
  • Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders to refine and operationalize performance criteria within our Net-Zero Standard.
  • Drive the strategy for embedding performance metrics across SBTi initiatives, ensuring alignment with global climate science.

What We're Looking For:

  • Expertise in Standard-Setting: Deep experience in developing, implementing, and evolving sustainability standards. Your background in standard-setting organizations will be crucial in shaping our approach to performance measurement.
  • Broad View on Accountability: A strategic thinker with a keen understanding of the wider accountability ecosystem. Your experience should transcend traditional in-company roles, showcasing a capacity to influence the broader climate action landscape.
  • Foundational Skills: Proficiency in science-based targets, GHG accounting in line with the GHG Protocol, and corporate climate strategy. While direct validation/certification experience is not a primary requirement, a comprehensive grasp of the interconnectedness of these elements is essential.
  • Collaboration and Influence: Demonstrated ability to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes and drive consensus among diverse groups.
  • Communication: Exceptional skills in articulating technical concepts to a variety of audiences, ensuring clarity and engagement.

Location: This full-time role is based in Europe or the UK, with salary dependent on location and experience. It's a fixed-term contract for 12 months, with potential for extension, reporting to the Head of Standards.

Our Offer:

  • Be part of a leading initiative at the forefront of climate action.
  • Work in a dynamic, international team committed to making a real difference.
  • Competitive salary, training opportunities, and an attractive holiday package.

SBTi fosters an inclusive workplace and is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Application Process: In collaboration with Climate17, please submit your resume, cover letter, and salary expectations to Kris Koby at , highlighting your standard-setting experience and your vision for enhancing accountability in climate action.
