Job description

A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Are you an experienced Band 6 or current Band 7 with interest in Elective Orthopaedics? If so, this exciting opportunity could be for you. This post is part of a dynamic, motivated team - assessing and treating patients who have undergone Elective Orthopaedic surgery, working closely with the MDT to develop and evolve the service whilst aiming to reduce waiting times and length of stay.
This is an exciting time for this specialty. Due to the pandemic the waiting list for surgery remains high and increasing patient complexity requires involvement and input to advance many different service initiatives. The unit has been working very closely with GIRFT in recent months and collaboration of the MDT has led to the development of the Leicester Enhanced Arthroplasty Pathway (LEAP) which has reviewed and streamlined the entire patient journey, explored changes to therapy ways of working and has facilitated multiple discharges of patients on day 0 following primary joint replacement.
You will be based at the Leicester General Hospital and will be required to work on the weekend roster, including bank holidays.
• Provide clinical and professional leadership to Physiotherapy colleagues in the team
• Be responsible for the clinical standards, evidence based practice and quality metrics within the team
• Work as an autonomous practitioner to provide specialist therapy assessments, diagnose and develop individualised treatment programmes based on the patients needs, using advanced clinical reasoning skills
• To be responsible for a clinical caseload; which will include complex cases
• Undertake an active role in developing Physiotherapy within the speciality
• Be responsible for the day to day management of the delivery of Physiotherapy by the team in an efficient and effective way within a fast and pressurised environment
• Work alongside the Therapy Speciality Lead / Therapy Clinical Team Leader to develop links between the specialist Therapy team and relevant CMG’s and Corporate Directorates within UHL
• Ensure the training and development of staff within the Therapy speciality Team
• Liaise with colleagues and work across site/cross speciality if appropriate in order to ensure the provision of a seamless equitable service
• Deputise for the Therapy Clinical Team Leader as appropriate
• Develop the evidence base for practice through audit, clinical effectiveness and research activity
• Assist and support the Therapy management team and Therapy Speciality Leads and Therapy Clinical Team Leaders within the service in the improvement and transformation of Therapy services
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

In this role, you will be leading and supporting the Physiotherapy team on a daily basis and will have scope to explore any innovative ideas that can lead to increased patient flow, service delivery and alternate ways of working with a now deconditioned patient group. You will also be required to build links across the Elective Orthopaedic Unit, working closely with all members of the MDT.
The case load is a combination of patients who have had primary and revision joint replacement surgery, upper and lower limb surgery, spinal surgery and some Trauma cases. The team provides a service to inpatient two wards and day-case ward. Alongside this, you would support the day to day running of a small Post-Surgery Urology team.
You will be working with patients with complex clinical needs. You will be required to manage a varied and complex caseload whilst supporting the Physiotherapy team, ensuring that the team are well supported and are exposed to varied learning opportunities and teaching. You will need to work with patients, families and the MDT in a sensitive and professional manner for the benefit of the patient. Sound prioritisation, time management and organisational skills are essential in this acute hospital environment whilst managing the demands of this role.
You will require sound supervisory and leadership skills. You will be expected to ensure that the Physiotherapy team are providing practice placements for Physiotherapy students and will complete new starter inductions. There is also structured in-service training in place within the team, which you will be required to drive forward and participate in.
You will be required to work closely with the Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist and Therapy Clinical Team Leader to lead service development, audit and research within the team and manage the operational running of the team.
