CNC Machinist
Job description
To work as a machinist in our precision CNC machine shop, operating either a horizontal borer, or vertical borer.
The day-to-day role will include:
- Following route cards and reading drawings to understand customer requirements and planned scope of work
- Setting large castings, forgings, fabrications, or profiles using a range of work-holding devices
- Selecting appropriate tooling
- Discussing and agreeing machining methods with managers
- Programming machine using Fanuc, Heidenhain, or Siemens controls
- Operating machine to machine component to customer specification
- Carrying out stage and final checks with Quality personnel
Other Duties - General assistance as part of the machine shop team
Person description
This role would suit an experienced machine shop engineer, who is looking for an interesting and varied role as part of important UK infrastructure projects and commercial prototype development work.
The successful candidate will be apprentice-trained and will have experience of setting and programming machine tools, as well as operating.
Training can be given to a candidate who is a skilled manual machinist but has not yet learned CNC programming.
Experience in machining different metals would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will need to be comfortable in a heavy engineering workshop, machining components over 5 tonnes in weight and over 1m diameter.
Essential
Machine shop apprenticeship or similar
Manual machining skills, or setting and programming own work
Able to work safely and following health, safety, quality, and environmental management systems
Desirable
Heavy engineering experience

Salary £16.05/hr day rate, £21.79/hr night rate.
Shift allowance (for 4-day compressed 40-hour week, alternating days and nights) £59/fortnight
Premium rate £22.33/hr (any overtime worked)
Expected earnings £41k-£45k
Working hours (days): 07.00-17.30 Monday to Thursday, with 30 minutes' unpaid lunch and paid morning and afternoon breaks; (nights): 19.00-05.00 Monday to Wednesday, 16.30 to 02.30 Thursday, with one hour paid break.
Overtime weekdays and nights additional 2 hours to 12-hour shift; Fridays 07.00-14.00; Saturdays 07.00-13.00
