Job description

Fixed term of 4 years. Christ Church Cathedral (the mother church of the Diocese of Oxford) serves also as the college chapel for Christ Church, one of the largest of the colleges of the University of Oxford, providing opportunities for discipleship and worship specifically for the students in its care. This dual role as Cathedral and College chapel is unique in the Church of England. The College has nearly 750 undergraduate and graduate students from all walks of life, both from the UK and overseas, together with a thriving academic faculty and an extensive staff. More general information about Christ Church may be obtained at www.chch.ox.ac.uk/cathedral. The College Chaplain is responsible to the Dean for all matters relating to the Cathedral and worship and to the Senior Censor where pastoral matters link with student welfare. This role includes liaison with members of the Cathedral Chapter; College Choir (i.e. the junior members’ choir); College students; colleagues in the Welfare Team; College tutors; College and Cathedral staff; and alumni, as appropriate. This position is offered for a fixed term of four years. The role is defined as a career development position and is ideally suited to someone who has completed, or is about to complete, their curacy and has been signed off by their Diocesan Bishop. The post offers an exciting opportunity for someone keen to explore a vocation to chaplaincy within the unique context of Christ Church. Christ Church is not restrictive in terms of age, all applications for this fixed term position will be considered. The College Chaplain will be paid a stipend equivalent to that of an incumbent in the Diocese of Oxford (currently £28,522). The successful candidate will be offered a house in Christ Church. Further particulars, including instructions about how to apply, may be downloaded from www.chch.ox.ac.uk/vacancies. The deadline for applications is 12 noon Wednesday 10th April 2024. Christ Church is committed to equality, and we value the diversity of our staff and students. It is our policy and practice that entry into employment and progression within employment will be determined only by criteria which are related to the duties of a particular post and the relevant salary scale. No applicant or member of staff will be treated less favourably than another because of their age, disability, ethnicity, marital or civil partnership status, parental status, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.
