Job description

Are you a qualified Commercial Technology Lawyer looking for an exciting challenge to work in this field in publishing?

If so, we have a role available on a permanent basis in the legal team at Penguin Random House, the world’s largest book publisher and home to brilliant books.

Each member of the legal team brings unique skills to their role but works together collaboratively to manage legal and commercial risks to meet and drive the needs and goals of the business.

In this role, you will report to our Senior Commercial Lawyer and will be a critical point of contact within our Legal division and to stakeholders across our Technology teams. You will be providing expertise, effective advice and managing and negotiating all draft technology contracts in order to support our strategy of technology as a key business driver. You will also provide legal support across the wider business including our digital marketing and data teams.

After finalising our technology, data and process merger recently, our Technology division is now moving forward with our technology strategy to further enable the organisation to bring amazing voices to all. This involves harnessing the power of Cloud solutions, a constantly evolving security stance, the rejuvenation of legacy applications and further improving the way we engage with and manage our strategic partners and suppliers. Across the business, technology now often plays a crucial role in bringing books and content to wider audiences.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working primarily with the Procurement and Technology Teams to effect robust technology contracts that ensure security of all PRH data and solid service levels.

  • Working with other business teams on all technology related contracts as required including data and digital marketing.

  • Providing tailored advice in a timely manner on any issues arising during the life-cycle of a contract as required.

  • Liaising with colleagues from across the business to obtain required information for any project.

  • Building and maintaining relationships within the business.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A solid background and significant experience in key areas of Commercial Technology law, documents and principles.

  • Good contract drafting and negotiation skills.

  • Diligence and good attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to ensure that advice is conveyed effectively to a range of different people, both in verbal and written form.

  • Good ability to work autonomously and as part of the legal and wider business team.

  • The ability to multi-task, prioritise and be flexible to changing priorities and demonstrate good organisational and analytical skills.

  • A qualification of at least 3 years PQE as a solicitor or barrister, or equivalent qualification from another jurisdiction.

Our approach to hybrid working:

We’re currently experimenting with hybrid working and involving colleagues across the business to shape our future ways of working. The needs of our teams and individuals are different, so we’re not taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

While our offices are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing.

For this role, there are likely to be meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person, mainly at our offices in Nine Elms. The exact balance of office to remote working will depend on the nature of your role and team needs, and we are open to discussing this through the recruitment process.

Please apply with your CV and cover letter by midnight on Sunday 10th March.
