Job Introduction

Our Staffordshire Deaf / Hearing Inclusion Team have 3 opportunities available from 1st September 2024. 

The posts are:

Post 1:  Fulford area x 10 hours (Thurs/ Fri)

Post 2: Cannock area x 10 hours (Thurs/Fri)

Post 3: Tamworth area x 20 hours (Mon/ Tues/ Thurs/ Fri)

Our large centrally based Deaf /Hearing Inclusion Team consists of Specialist Teachers, Education Audiologists, Communication Support Workers, intervenors, a HI Role Model, and an ICT Support Technician. 

As a team, we support Deaf children and young people with a diagnosed hearing loss from 0-25 in a variety of settings including homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, colleges, and specialist provision. We maintain a strong commitment to multi-agency working, inclusive education, high standards of attainment, and quality of life experiences for all our pupils.

Main Responsibility

In this role, you will be supporting a Deaf child or young person as part of the Specialist Teaching Support Service. 

Under the direction of the Specialist Teacher of the Deaf and Team Leader, you will

  • assist the Service and class teachers in the implementation of the pupil curriculum.
  • carry out, under the direct supervision of the teacher(s), individual programmes of learning specifically to support the pupil(s) concerned
  • assist with the development of basic skills such as language (including BSL sign language) and numeracy, where necessary 
  • assist in the implementation of any programmes of support designed by other professionals, including the Specialist Teacher of the Deaf and when appropriate, Speech and Language Therapist etc
  • assist in the maintenance and use of specialist equipment including daily checks.
  • assist the school in maintaining close liaison with the pupil(s) parents or guardians.
  • assist the class and specialist teacher(s) in maintaining a detailed written record of progress,
  • support the general care, welfare and safety of the pupil(s) and undertaken any specific care needs of the pupil concerned
  • carry out small group activities as requested by their teacher(s), to include the identified pupil(s).

The Ideal Candidate

You will:

  • be enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and committed person, who will work within education settings to support a high quality, inclusive educational experience for deaf children.
  • have completed the BSL Level 2 qualification  (a commitment to achieve a minimum of level 2 is essential if not already held).
  • have experience of supporting students in schools and have a passion for inclusion 

As an employee of the Specialist Teaching Support Service you may be required, on occasion, to work across the county. As such, you must be able to drive, have a driving licence and have daily access to a car. However, for disabled applicants, reasonable adjustments will be made where required.

You will be supported to develop in this role by a Qualified Teacher of the Deaf.
