Job description

Are you passionate about building understanding and support for nature?
Do you have the skills, knowledge and experience to lead WWT’s communications and ensure we reach a wide range of audiences?
From restoring nature and providing homes for wildlife to protecting communities from the devastating impact of flooding, wetlands are a powerful weapon in the fight against the climate crisis. We’re looking for someone to help us share stories about the superpowers of this under-rated habitat to inspire one million people to take action to protect, restore and create bigger and better wetlands.
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced Communications Manager to join us at an exciting time for WWT as we deliver our new strategy to 2030 and put WWT and wetlands at the heart of the conservation debate.
This role will be critical in leading the delivery of WWT’s communications strategy and building a bolder voice for wetlands and the amazing wildlife that they support. Working with colleagues across the organisation, you’ll design and lead the delivery of impactful and dynamic communication plans that reach a range of audiences and support our ambitious plans. You’ll be able to bring the incredible stories of wetlands to life, remain calm in a crisis and build WWT’s profile and influence across on and offline channels.
We’re an organisation of action, running multiple conservation projects and networks in the UK and around the world, as well as our own network of wetland visitor sites in the UK. As our Communications Manager you will lead a team to project manage organisation-wide communications plans, in the UK and internationally, and also provide communications advice to colleagues across WWT.
We are seeking an individual:
- Experienced in designing and delivering integrated communications plans aimed at a diverse range of audiences, including the public, supporters, policy makers and stakeholders, which deliver measurable results.
- With a track record of developing and implementing ambitious and strategic communications to raise an organisation’s profile, drive public engagement and encourage direct action for a cause.
- A strategic thinker, you will be skilled in building effective working relationships across an organisation and confident in advising colleagues on proactive communications plans, how to engage target audiences and responding to reactive issues.
- Experienced in working in complex organisations and turning technical, scientific data and evidence into engaging communications and campaigns to inspire and drive support with key target audiences.
If you want to make a direct contribution to the conservation of wetlands and wetland species at a critical moment for the natural world the click apply.
We are based in Slimbridge Wetland Centre, Gloucestershire, but support hybrid working with an expectation for team members to be in Slimbridge at least once a week.
About us
We’re WWT, the charity for wetlands and wildlife.
WWT is a wetland conservation charity that works in the UK and around the world. These amazing habitats are essential to all life, including our own. But across the world their health is under threat, and that’s damaging for wildlife, the planet, and for us.
Healthy wetlands are one of the most nature-rich habitats on earth and they help control our climate. They store carbon, prevent flooding, reduce pollution, and the livelihoods of many communities entirely depend on them.
That’s why we work directly to protect, restore and create healthy wetlands, and why we inspire and help others to do the same. We make change happen, through our conservation projects around the world and our pioneering wetland centres across the UK, where each year a million people come to engage with nature.
In return for your hard work and dedication you’ll enjoy a wide range of benefits including:
- 33 days annual leave, inclusive of bank holidays, increasing to 38 days after 5 years’ service
- Contributory pension scheme matching up to 7%
- Life assurance providing 3 times annual salary
- Access to a wide range of resources to support your health and wellbeing including our 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
- Enhanced family friendly policies
- Cycle to work scheme
- Free entry to all our centres
Closing date: 25 January 2024
Interview date: Week commencing 5 February 2024
WWT is an equal opportunities employer and all applications will be considered solely on merit.
