The Centre for Argument Technology (ARG-tech) is looking for a highly motivated Computer Scientist to join its team in the Discipline of Computing at the University of Dundee. The post is a fixed term contract to March 2025, with the intention of extending the post funding permitting.
ARG-tech is a world-leading research group in computational application of theories of argument. The inter-disciplinary team has attracted funding of over £15m, with over 200 peer-reviewed papers. It has the largest freely accessible corpus of analysed argumentation anywhere in the world. We have led in the development of robust, standardised file formats, as well as designing an open-source, argument analysis tool (OVA) with thousands of users.
The Computer Scientist will support the analysis, navigation, and exploitation of these datasets, by developing innovative computational solutions to process and manage the data. The Computer Scientist will work closely with PIs, PDRAs, and others in the group to provide added value where most needed.
Your priorities will include:
- Contribute to the application of algorithms in argumentation research
- Development of data analytic solutions for argumentation research
- Backend development using a range of languages, technologies, architectures, approaches and systems
- Coordinate documentation and maintenance standards
- Champion new initiatives in applied argument technology
Who we're looking for:
- Have (or working towards) an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in computing
- Excellent programming skills in various computer languages
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including evidence of team working and a proactive attitude
- The ability to generate well-written documentation
- Demonstrable experience with backend development and data analysis, in particular textual data
