Job description

About us:

We’re the professional body for the police service in England and Wales. We work with everyone in policing to set standards, to share knowledge and good practice and to support the development of police officers and staff. Our mission is to drive a consistent approach across policing where the public and the service expect it, to boost professionalism and to improve leadership at every level.

Although we're a small organisation, our work has a big reach. We are uniquely placed to work both with national policing organisations and local forces to support frontline officers, staff and volunteers in their day-to-day roles.

We offer a supportive and inclusive environment for people to thrive. Our extensive flexible-working policy, employee wellbeing support, family friendly policies, employers’ network for equality and inclusion membership (ENEI silver award winners), and status as a disability confident leader means everyone can bring their whole self to work.

About the job:

As one of two Copy Editors within the Creative Services team, you will provide professional editorial services across all areas of College work to support our branding commitment to supply users with relevant, easy to understand, accessible content. You will also lead training and guidance development to embed tone of voice principles and house style within a communications strategy that supports organisational business objectives and strategic priorities.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing editorial services and leadership within Creative Services to develop regularly reviewed user-centred copy that is consistent, accessible and immediately identifiable as part of a trusted and authoritative brand.
  • Proactively managing collaborative relationships with subject matter experts across the organisation to ensure projects reach a consistent editorial standard ahead of publication.
  • Developing and facilitating regular training for new starters and content writers that embeds our tone of voice principles and style guide use throughout product and service development.

To be successful in this role you’ll need:

  • Expert knowledge of English language and at least two years of professional experience editing technical or specialist publications such as manuals, textbooks, journals or procedural information.
  • Proven ability of taking complex information and turning it into plain English.
  • To be a collaborative thinker able to work with project teams to develop user-centred solutions within agreed time and resourcing parameters.
