Job description

The Electoral Commission

Corporate Director

Salary: £113,000

Location: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff or Belfast. Office attendance required at least 40% of the time.

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. It promotes public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity. A small yet high-impact organisation, our work is wide-reaching and of significant public interest, not least currently in the midst of a General Election campaign. The Commission continues to oversee the delivery of an important cycle of polls and implementation of the Elections Act 2022. It will regulate the rules on political finance, in the context of increasingly complex campaigning techniques and growing public concerns. It will also continue to play a crucial role in coordinating, leading and informing debate to ensure the resilience of our democratic process.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the new role of Corporate Director. The role of the Commission has risen in importance and, this year alone, we will support the delivery of local, mayoral and a UK General Election. With ongoing changes driven by the digital revolution and the way in which voters are engaging with the system - from social media’s impact on political debate to increasing devolution of election powers - our work is at the heart of some of the most passionately discussed topics of the day. As our Corporate Director, you will lead our key corporate enabling functions, including our finance, strategy, planning, performance, procurement, PMO and HR teams, to ensure that the organisation’s resources are efficiently and effectively managed to deliver on our strategic ambitions both now and in the future, with the potential for significant transformation on the horizon. As a member of the Electoral Commission’s Executive Team, you will also play a key corporate leadership role, supporting the development and delivery of strategy, culture and change across the organisation.

Your Background

You will be a qualified accountant and experienced senior leader, with a track record of successfully leading broad portfolios of corporate services that include finance and other services. Confident, resilient and energetic, you will be adept at managing professional/technical experts from different professions and you will evidence the ability to achieve positive outcomes in both effectiveness and efficiency. You will be adept at conceiving and delivering transformation in a complex environment, able to grasp the stakeholder landscape and policy frameworks in which we operate. You will demonstrate the ability to operate effectively in a political environment, at pace and you will bring a positive focus to leading transformation and continuous improvement across governance and operations.

We are committed to our workforce being representative of the diversity of the UK population. Applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates are particularly welcomed.

This is a critical and exciting role at the heart of safeguarding the UK electoral process.
