Job description

Corporate Governance Manager

A great opportunity has arisen to work at the centre of the General Medical Council on a fixed term basis until the end of June 2025.  The Corporate Governance Team works closely with the Chair and Chief Executive and ensures Council and other senior decision-makers have sound systems and processes in place to support them. During the tenure of this role, we expect to be designing and introducing a number of changes to our governance arrangements as a result of legislative reforms making this an interesting and exciting time to join us.

As a Corporate Governance Manager you’ll have a busy and varied role requiring excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, discretion, patience and tenacity to ensure high quality and timely materials are prepared for the full range of governance meetings. You’ll have significant experience in managing work programmes, agendas and minute-taking in a similar environment but will also be able to think innovatively and work collaboratively as part of a small, highly-expert team of Governance Managers committed to the values of an organisation focused on good, safe patient care across the UK.

This is a hybrid role between home working and office working; you’ll work 1 day a week in the office, or more if you prefer. We may ask you to attend the office on additional days where necessary, for example team meetings. You’ll need to attend the Council and committee meetings you are servicing, which might be in any of our UK locations or online.

You can find more detail on the tasks you will undertake, and the essential skills required for the role, in the job description.

We work with doctors, patients, and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the UK. We set the standards doctors and those who train them need to meet and help them achieve them. If there are concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in doctors may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

You’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people with several excellent benefits including:

  • 30 days holiday with the option to buy and sell more
  • A generous employer pension contribution of 15%
  • Access to a range of learning and development opportunities designed to support your ongoing progression
  • Hybrid and flexible working
  • Attractive salary that’s reviewed annually
  • Private medical insurance
  • Bike lockers and shower facilities

How to apply for the role

Please provide a CV and covering letter. The covering letter should clearly set out how you meet the essential skills for the role, which are listed in the job description. You should also include a paragraph outlining your reasons for applying for the role.

We recommend no more than 2 sides of A4 for the covering letter, but it can be more if required.

We will assess the information you provide against the skills required for the role and let you know whether you will progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

If you do not provide all the above, we will not be able to progress your application.

Diversity and inclusive

The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination. We are also committed to the Disability Confident employer scheme and support the requirements of the Disability Confident interview scheme. If you have a disability and meet the cut-off mark for the essential criteria for this role as outlined in the person specification document, you will be offered an interview.
