Job description

Second Chance Headway Centre is recruiting a Charity Business Manager to lead, motivate and support a professional team to provide a range of services for adults with acquired brain injuries.

The centre has an empowered and supported structure, with three professional managers, each responsible to the Board of Trustees and ultimately to the members.  The flat structure enables the Business Service, Therapy and Rehab Activity Centre and Casework Services to operate individually, but in close cooperation with each other, providing a comprehensive and linked set of services.

The Second Chance Headway Centre is a registered Charity and Limited Company, and is a members organisation, operating for and on behalf of the members who each have a vote at the AGM.

This post is essential in obtaining robust and consistent commissioning and funding, while managing the business and facilities.  The role carries a high degree of autonomy and responsibility.  Working with our Therapy / Rehab Activity Centre and Casework Managers, our Nurses, OT’s, Caseworkers and support staff, and liaising/working with support from our outsourced HR, IT and payroll services.

Person Specification

Strong experience of business and departmental management.

Strong experience of managing services in a changing and developing environment and adapting strategy to meet and address outside influences.

The ability to work on own initiative with high levels of commitment, reliability, and motivation, and to influence, motivate, empower, and compromise as appropriate as part of a team.

Educated to degree level or equivalent by experience.

Management Qualification or equivalent by experience.

 

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Operational/Business Leadership

To provide effective day to day management relating to charitable and business aspects of the Second Chance Headway Centre and manage the operational activity of the charity according to the strategic direction provided by the Board of Trustees.

To report to the Board of Trustees, providing Board reports and accurate, up to date information pertaining to contracts, projects and New Business.  To be responsible for updating and revising the charity’s business plan, budget plan, and fundraising strategy in accordance with the Boards strategic direction.

To work in partnership with external partners and the clinical manager and casework service manager; to clearly demonstrate and promote the positive impact of the Charity and support the mission and values of the charity.

To drive awareness, to extend the scope of services, identify beneficiaries, and engage with the wider community. to develop new partnerships with statutory, voluntary, and private sector organisations.

 

Financial

To be responsible for the negotiation of contracts, statutory commissioning, grants, fundraising, bid writing, overseeing the collection of data, monitoring, and reporting KPI outcomes to funding bodies and donors.

To create, implement and manage an appropriate range of operational policies and procedures.

To manage the governance and internal controls to comply with statutory and regulatory requirements including Audit and Accounts, GDPR, HR and Health and Safety, EDI.

To capture complaints, compliments, and feedback, and manage them in accordance with our standards and policies.

Ensure Second Chance Headway Centre complies with submissions of statutory, professional codes and legal requirements, including Companies House, HMRC and Charity Commission returns and reports.

Manage the End of Year financial reporting and Annual General Meeting.  Liaising with our independent examiners.

Conduct appraisals and regular 1-2-1 meetings with direct reports, and to promote and arrange appropriate training and development.

 

Facilities

Facilities management of the premises and equipment.  Managing and arranging repairs and maintenance.

Managing the appropriate availability and use of equipment. to ensure fit for the organisation’s needs and enhance effectiveness of the charity.

Review and renewal of all insurance policies that affect the organisation, including ones related to facilities, public liability, HR.

To create and maintain appropriate risk and accident registers, and fire tests records.

To organise the maintenance of social media, website, publicity, and events.

To undertake any other relevant duties within the overall scope of the role, as requested by the board of Trustees.

 

Outsourced Services

Human Resources, procedures and policies, salaries, Care Cloud, Sage financials systems, IT and communications, and Salaries and accounts, are supported by outsourced contracts.  Advised externally, and with that support, the business staff manage administration of systems.

Key skills, competencies, and experience.

The charity is seeking someone with a wide range of skills and experiences to cover the following requirements.  You will be experienced, and have achieved successes in many of these, and must be able to develop your skills to cover anything that would be new to you.

·        Experience in dealing with external contractors.

·        Discretion and diplomacy when handling confidential information.

·        Ability to synthesise and analyse a wide range of information and present data in a digestible format and to a high standard.

·        An Understanding of data protection and confidentiality.

·        A flexible approach to work, with the ability to efficiently work and meet tight deadlines.

·        Ability to prioritise, delegate and work methodically.

·        Ability to identify, develop and implement effective administration systems.

·        Ability to solve problems and make good judgements.

·        Willingness to constructively challenge the work of self and others to continually improve performance.

·        Experience of managing staff and volunteers.

·        Experience of budget setting and budget control.

·        Experience of working with people with disabilities and their families.

·        Understanding of the current issues affecting people who have complex life histories and have experienced trauma.

·        An understanding of Health and Safety legislation

 

Key Competencies and behaviours

·        Experience of developing and maintaining partnerships and commissioning with statutory, voluntary, and private sector organisations.

·        Experience and track record in identifying and securing new funding, fundraising and contract negotiation.

·        Experience at delivering a high-level communication and interpersonal skills.

·        Competent in the use of MS Office systems.

·        The ability to prioritise and manage your workload and the ability to work under pressure with raised responsibility.

·        Able to work closely with Clinical, casework and support staff and Brain Injured Adults.

·        Able to occasionally work outside of contracted hours if required.

·        A commitment to support the work of the charity across West Yorkshire.

·        Ability to undertake travel as required and clean drivers license and own car essential.
