Job description

Description

This opportunity is part of the Surrey County Council Summer Work Experience Programme which is taking place for one week in July 2024! You are applying for either the week beginning 1st July or 8th July and the placement will take place at Woodhatch Place, Reigate

You will spend your first day with other Work Experience students at our head office in Reigate learning about the council, the services we run and the variety of careers in local government. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be with your placement team, also in Reigate. Your last day everyone will come back together at Woodhatch Place to bring together everything that they have learnt during the week

We are a Strategy and Policy team and support senior leaders in the organisation and councillors on a range of projects and initiatives. We do desk-based research, provide advice, written briefings and presentations to our stakeholders, and attend meetings with other teams in the council, and external partners, where we discuss and collaborate with others around projects. Some of the topics we are working on now include: the rising cost of living, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), anticipating the future policy priorities of the next national government, and anticipating and planning for risks that might impact on the council's ability to deliver services.

The placement will offer you the opportunity to find out more about the work of the team through attending project meetings and talking with members of the team about their work. If you would like to, you can also get involved in some of the work e.g. through doing some desk based research into a topic.

You will gain awareness of:

  • How Strategy and Policy is developed at the Council
  • How to undertake research into policy areas
  • How to scan the external environment for risks and opportunities
  • How we work with other teams and external partners e.g voluntary organisations

The placement will especially suit someone who has an interest in government, politics and public policy, or someone who has an interest in a job in public services. You don't need to have studied a particular subject to take part in the placement.

As part of your application you will be asked to answer the following 3 questions:

  1. What interests you about this area of work?
  2. What skills and knowledge would you like to develop during your placement?
  3. What knowledge and skills do you have that would be relevant to this area of work?

Before applying please check that you are happy with the location/s of the placement and that you are aware that you will also need to be able to travel to Woodhatch Place, Reigate.

If you have any questions about this opportunity, please email apprenticeships@surreycc.gov.uk.

The closing date for applications for this opportunity is 23:59 on the 3rd March.
