Counsellor - £28,407 – £42,618 (NHS Band 5-6)

Avon and Somerset Police are seeking two qualified and experienced Counsellors to join our professional occupational health team. You will play a crucial role in providing proactive, comprehensive, and confidential counselling services to our officers and staff. BACP accreditation or equivalent is an essential requirement.

This role will offer hybrid working, where the expectation is to work at least 40% of your hours at a police location. Full and part time hours are available.

About us:

As an organisation, we are introducing a new counselling service as an extension to our established Psychological Support Team, to assist employees coping with work-related incidents affecting their mental health.

This position is an opportunity to make a significant impact on the mental well-being of those who serve and protect our community.

The role:

You will be responsible for providing a proactive, comprehensive, and confidential counselling service to our police officers, police staff.

Providing confidential one-on-one counselling sessions, dealing with a variety of mental heath and work-related challenges

You will need a thoughtful and strategic approach to address the diverse needs of individuals seeking support.

Main responsibilities:

  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, providing short term focused therapy.
  • Conduct thorough assessments for mild to moderate mental health conditions.
  • Create treatment plans tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of each person.
  • Maintain records of session content, ongoing treatment plans and record clinical outcome data using the OH Cority system.
  • Generate correspondence/reports, ensuring effective communication of clinically sensitive information both verbally and in writing.
  • Supervise return to work programmes in terms of offering practical solutions to clients and their line managers.

Essential skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Advanced Course, Degree or Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling.
  • BACP Accredited or equivalent.
  • Experience of working with mild to moderate mental health conditions.
  • Be able to demonstrate evidence and maintenance of continued professional development.
  • Experience of preparing written correspondence and writing reports.
  • Computer literacy both Microsoft and bespoke systems.

Desirable experience:

  • Working within a large and complex organisation.
  • Experience of using Cority
  • Experience of working in an occupational health setting

Additional information:

This role may require travel across our force area therefore, a full current UK driving licence or the willingness to travel using alternative transport will be necessary.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.

Blended Working/ Hybrid Working

Avon and Somerset Police encourage flexible working where operationally possible.
This role has been identified as a blended role.
The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises. The successful applicant will have the option to discuss working arrangements with their line manager. All applicants must reside within the UK.
