Job Introduction
We are looking for a Commercial Rights & Business Affairs Executive to join the BBC Commercial, Rights and Business Affairs (CRBA) News team. This is a permanent part-time role based in London, W1; our expectation is this would be a two and a half day a week position but are open to discuss how this could be phased.
CRBA manages and connects the BBC's Intellectual Property, strategic and business interests through expert negotiation, contracting and commercial deal-making. It is comprised of multiple business teams embedded in Content (including Television, Radio & Music, Children's & Education, Sport), News, Technology & Product, the Nations, plus a central CRBA team. The teams share many common business activities key to the commissioning, production and distribution of the BBC's services and content. Also, the teams work with the BBC's professional services including Finance, HR, Legal, Editorial Policy and Strategy.
Although you may be assigned to a particular CRBA area and workload, from time to time you may be required to work in other areas of CRBA to broaden knowledge, skills and experience.
All CRBA colleagues are 'agile workers' and our expectation is that they will work an average of 2-3 day per week in BBC buildings.
Main Responsibilities
As Commercial Rights & Business Affairs Executive, you will work closely with editorial and production management and provide day-to-day business affairs support to News, (UK and International) including: timely news content rights advice including re-use of archive, risk assessment, fair dealing, clearances and potential costs; supporting with agency/client negotiations and approval processes; supporting business development teams; producing materials for presentations and reports; providing relevant training for production areas.
You will help to support the development of business affairs best practice, training, etc. for the wider CRBA News team.
Are you the right candidate?
To be successful in this role the following skills, knowledge, and experience are essential:

  • Rights management experience gained in a broadcaster or independent production company;
  • understanding of editorial policy and of the production process;
  • giving rights and clearances advice and rights management;
  • proven ability to work with different systems;
  • giving clear advice both written and verbal;
  • experience of working both individually and as a member of a team and knowing when to escalate issues;
  • ability to problem solve and provide support in a time pressured environment;
  • ability to prioritise tasks and manage stakeholders;
  • self-starter and ability to see tasks through to completion;
  • willingness to acquire new skills and adapt existing skills; and
  • interest in news and current affairs, broadcast and digital media.

The following are desirable:

  • awareness of copyright law gained through practical experience or legal studies,
  • news systems and external archive systems e.g. Jupiter, Davina, Star, ENPS, CPS, Silvermouse, Fabric and news agency systems, and
  • music clearances and reporting.

Package Description
Band: C
Contract type: Permanent - part-time (17.5 hours/2.5 days a week)
Location: London based role with some flexibility - i.e. hybrid working
Salary: FTE GBP30,000 to GBP40,000pa (inclusive of London Weighting GBP5,164) which pro rata's to GBP15,000 to GBP20,000pa (inclusive of London Weighting GBP2,582), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.
