Job description

This is an exceptional opportunity for someone interested in sharing in the operation and maintenance of the historic Cross Keys Swing Bridge at Sutton Bridge. The listed swing bridge, built in 1897, carries the A17 over the River Nene and opens to allow the passage of commercial and other river vessels to and from the Port of Wisbech.

Duties include operating the bridge, but also routine maintenance and cleaning of the structure. Therefore, the position requires a confidence in working over water and at heights and an ability to access constrained areas using ladders and hatches.

The position requires a self-motivated, self-reliant individual, who is able to demonstrate an intelligent common sense approach to practical problems and communicate effectively with colleagues, members of the public and contractors.

However, as well as living within 10 miles of the bridge and being part of the call out service, the right person will need to work an anti-social shift pattern. Once trained, for the majority of the time this will be on your own, sharing the 24 hour staffing of the bridge with the other operators. You will also need to cover leave and other absences, for which appropriate overtime payments will be made. The shift patterns to be covered (including night shifts) and call out arrangements are given in the Appendix to the job description.  As a part time operator, you will be required to work alternate blocks of seven shifts.

As well as being required to have four GCSEs (or equivalent) at C or above, some understanding of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems is required. Experience in traffic management and VHF radio operation would be advantageous, although training will be given to the successful candidate in any areas where a need is identified. Normal operation of the bridge is done using a computer system, and so at least basic IT skills are required.

Contracted Hours:

Average Worked Hours Per Week: 20.344 (Based on 21 shifts over an eight week shift pattern)

Contracted Salary:

Pro rata Salary for contracted hours, plus stand by allowances and payments for additional hours.

There is a possibility of the post becoming full time in due course.
