Job Description
We have an opening for a Process Engineer. This work will take place within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate, home to the world’s most energetic laser. It is an exciting time to join the team that achieved fusion ignition in December 2022 (and repeated a few times in 2023), a historic moment in science, opening up new physics regimes and setting the stage for new fusion energy possibilities.
You will commission and maintain operational status of the various vacuum and cryogenic processes related to the successful fielding of ignition and other types of targets for the Target Experimental Operations group on the National Ignition Facility. You will have advanced technical knowledge and experience in the areas of process gas behavior in cryogenic regimes including mitigation of potential hazards to maintain operational readiness. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate. LSEO provides support to National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate
In this role you will

  • Collaborate with a team of engineers, staff, and technicians responsible for commissioning and maintaining operational status of NIF facility sub-systems, including gas supply systems, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, related hardware, and control systems while also emphasizing reliability and yield improvement.
  • Develop, document, execute, analyze, and trouble-shoot various complex production processes and equipment to support cryogenic and other target shots on NIF.
  • Act as a liaison with scientific personnel executing experiments or implementing new or upgraded facility capabilities to provide solutions for target fielding experimental design issues.
  • Work with controls engineering organization to develop requirements and test procedures for automated process control of assigned systems. Assist with software commissioning.
  • Direct technicians to design, build, or modify specialized process equipment.
  • Define and prepare/review operating and maintenance procedures and maintain laboratory safety standards.
  • Present work through formal and informal reports and presentations.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams in the development of innovative methods and knowledge sharing.
  • Assess the safety of experiment setups to help define the bounds of the experiment related to the target and gas pairing of that experiment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
  • Significant knowledge and experience utilizing sound engineering principles to provide practical solutions to complex hardware and software problems.
  • Significant experience providing technical insight, oversight, and direction as it relates to solving problems in the field that involve complex chemical processes, vacuum systems, and preferably cryogenic systems governed by chemical kinetics, transport effects, overall mass and energy balances, and process/system economics.
  • Advanced knowledge of cryogenic processes, gas handling systems, and process controls, and the behavior of gases at cryogenic temperatures.
  • Significant experience in deploying automated process controls, development of interlocks, and automated processes.
  • Significant experience in production operations and process development.
  • Ability to operate PC and/or Macintosh computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate effectively and collaborate with technical support personnel on requirements, design, safety, construction, or modification of process, pilot-scale equipment or systems, and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in Materials, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with handling of radioactive and/or flammable gases/materials.
