Why this job matters
Most of the customer and internal infrastructure equipment that BT buys is made in non-UK locations and has to be imported. Once it is put together as a customer delivery it has to be shipped to that customer and this is often overseas.
International shipping is vital to BT’s business and underpins the entire company. BT must comply with all import and export requirements and laws. Failure in this area could lead to an inability to ship internationally with a major impact on the bottom line.
This role ensures that BT can ship internationally in a timely and cost-effective manner and allows BT to do this in a legal and compliant manner.
What you’ll be doing
  • Carry out and facilitate specialised expertise skills enabling the import and export of all BT, EE & Openreach’s goods to customers globally.
  • To lead on all licence applications using SPIRE, ensure all licences are renewed within the required time frames.
  • To meet BT’s annual reporting obligations to the UK Export Licencing Authority.
  • Be responsible and accountable for ensuring that all BT’s global shipping is legal and compliant with government regulations (export licensing, duty & taxes, sanctions compliance etc.)
  • Keeping abreast of UK government regulations, act to ensure BT will not have any trade compliance concerns, ensuring required licenses and authorisations are in place.
  • Provide Intrastat information. Filings require details of all dispatches (sales) of goods to other EU countries, plus the arrivals (purchases) within EU countries.
  • Provide both bespoke and standard shipping solutions and be accountable for them fully meeting customer requirements.
  • Provide timely export classification (Trade Tariff) information HS codes/ECCNs etc. ensuring our products to be exported have the correct commodity codes, warranting BT pays correct duty and VAT rates.
  • To take a risk-based approach to problem solving, balancing business needs with legal, regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Responsible for calling out compliance risks with senior leaders pan-BT; challenging thinking and holding the business to account.
  • Provide support for country and regional projects, leading on export/import controls.
  • Check/audit shipping commercial invoices highlight any anomalies, corrective action to our freight forwarder.
  • Carry out import audits on HMRC MSS data to ensure imports are compliantly declared.
  • Provide input into the freight forwarder compliance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Responsibility for End User Undertakings, completed compliantly to ensure our export licence is used to HMRC/ECJU regulations.

  • Compliance, regulatory and audit experience in a large listed organisation

  • Experience of testing/challenging current thinking and formulating new approaches

  • Highly computer literate
  • Understanding of global logistics and International Trade and the compliance & legal aspects of this
