Data Business Analyst

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data analysis within the insurance industry, with a focus on specialty insurance lines. The role will involve collaborating with various stakeholders to gather, analyse, and interpret data, and to provide valuable insights that will support strategic decision-making and operational efficiency.


As a Data Business Analyst, you will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between business needs and technical solutions, focusing on data-driven insights and analytics. The successful candidate will have a strong technical data background, a deep understanding of the specialty insurance domain, and the ability to translate complex business requirements into actionable data solutions.

The Central Data Office will include a transformation and strategy team, which this role will be part of. The role focuses on the harmonisation of the data into a central data and analytics platform and will work alongside IT technical architects and engineers to implement strategic priorities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand and document data requirements for various projects and initiatives within the specialty insurance domain.
  • Work closely with underwriters, actuaries, and other business units to capture and analyse data needs from various source systems (Policy, Claims , Revenue etc.)
  • Data flow mapping from source to target system data models.
  • Conduct thorough data analysis and profiling to identify data quality issues, anomalies, and patterns, gaps.
  • Understanding of conceptual, logical, and physical data models and database schemas.
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications for data solutions, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and organisational standards.
  • Support the Data Governance function in the develop and enforcement of data governance policies and procedures to ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal standards.
  • Work closely with data engineers, developers, and architects and BI Developers to implement data solutions that meet expected requirements set out by IT and in relation to the business need.
  • Provide technical guidance and support throughout the data development lifecycle.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for data solutions, including data dictionaries, business glossaries, process flows, and user guides.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to the evolution of data-related capabilities.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Solid hands-on Data Business analysis experience, within Insurance (London Market experience a significant advantage).
  • Supporting business and IT projects from a data requirements perspective, ensuring that these help to build towards the overall target state data architecture.
  • Work in support of Analytics & Insights colleagues including awareness of areas such as Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, etc.
  • Supporting Data Governance colleagues in areas such as metadata management, data lineage, data audits and general data quality improvement
  • Strong desire to learn and grow into a wider range of the above disciplines. Extensive stakeholder management ability with experience in maintaining tact in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
  • Understanding and knowledge of system development life cycle methodologies (such as agile software development, rapid prototyping, incremental, synchronize and stabilize, and DevOps)
  • Ability to estimate the financial impact of technology alternatives in terms of benefit and cost
  • Familiarity with data modeling, ETL processes, and data warehousing concepts.
  • Advanced Data Extraction / Manipulation (e.g. SQL), Dashboard & Reporting tools (e.g. Power BI), Data Integration tools (e.g. Informatica), Data Governance / Quality / Catalogue / Lineage tools (e.g. Alation, Collibra)
