Global Water Intelligence (GWI), the leading publisher, intelligence firm and event’s organiser serving the international water industry, is looking to hire a hardworking and enthusiastic Data Editor to join our team.

At GWI we collect a huge amount of data and are the main source of data for the international water industry. Our data and analysis is used by businesses, governments and investors to inform strategic decisions on the water sector.

In some cases, we can collect near-comprehensive market data, while for others we need to rely on a combination of modelling, indicators, and contacts. In both cases, data needs to be collected, interpreted, and presented by in-house analysts who know enough about their subject area to validate and contextualise our numbers.

As a Data Editor, you will get to grips with new subject areas, explore unique market value datasets, and manage your own databases that our journalism is based on.

We are looking for someone with a logical and inquisitive mind, a good head for numbers and an adaptable approach to work. Relevant training will be provided.

Responsibilities of our Data Editor:

  • Build, manage and maintain datasets: You will help the data team provide invaluable datasets and databases to our clients. This includes building, collecting and managing external datasets, updating sources, analysing information and accurately highlighting anomalies.
  • Collect and manage databases: We provide numerous up to date, informative databases each telling their own story of the water sector. You will collect and compile external and internal data, standardise the information and input it in our content management system.
  • Analyse and visualise data: Working with large datasets comes with challenges, so effective data analysis and visualisation is essential to draw out the interesting stories hiding behind the data. You will help analyse and develop visualisations to understand the present and future of the market.
  • Clearly communicate information: Our customers rely on our numbers to help validate their business decisions. To earn that trust we need to communicate our methods and assumptions clearly. The same challenge applies internally. You will play a key role in data related co-ordination and communication within teams and to clients.
  • Interview people and understand the context behind the numbers: The best way to check data validity is to speak to the publishers and data owners. We need people who can proactively network with individuals to source the data and validate its accuracy.
  • Work across teams towards wider business growth: Your work will always be part of a bigger picture – in taking ownership of your projects you will collaborate with teams across the business to ensure everything we do contributes towards the company’s vision and goals.

Person requirements:

We do not expect any previous Data Editor experience or knowledge of the water sector but, we are looking for candidates with strong academic credentials.

If you think you are good at two or three of the following skills, we would like to hear from you.

  • Knowledge of good data management practices, with the ability to collect, organize, and structure large datasets
  • Knowledge of how to extract and standardise data from multiple sources, including excel, csv, txt, pdfs and image files
  • Experience following an ETL workflow is desirable
  • Keen eye for detail, taking care to check through work to avoid errors
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex data systems to the wider team
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, including taking initiative, showing ownership of tasks, and managing your time

Desirable but not essential:

  • Familiarity with financial accounts and corporate structures of companies
  • Experience using Excel (including PivotTables or Power Query)
