Job description

The Data Engineer is experienced in their field, they will be able to demonstrate considerable experience in SQL and may be involved with other types of development, as the business requires. They will also be responsible for the delivery of high quality data solutions The Data Engineer has a deep working knowledge of SQL Server 2016 & onwards environment. They are responsible for the design, development and delivery of full SQL solutions using the Microsoft stack.? They have strong T-SQL skills and have experience of developing and maintaining solutions.

The Data Engineer will also be a key person in the mass migration of data between systems, leading on understanding, interpreting and mapping data between systems, to enable successful data loads, and, as such, the role requires prior experience of working in data and data migrations. As the Data Engineer, they will have gained experience in a variety of different tools and implementations and be capable of making informed choices and influencing key project decision making.? They must be able to work within an agile team and be able to manage your time effectively. You must self-motivated, enthusiastic and have a natural thirst for exploring new technologies. They must have previous experience of working within a team and be able to demonstrate an aptitude to teach and mentor less experienced colleagues to a good level of understanding. They must lead by example, guiding and mentoring others and being a role model to aspire to.

Compensation package

Salary discussed & disclosed on application, hybrid working 1 day per week in office remainder remote working, Health Care Cash Plan, Holidays 25 days plus 8 bank holidays (opportunity to buy & sell 3 days) increasing to 26 after 5 years’ service and to 27 after 10 years’ service, Death In Service - after 1 year, Employer Pension Contribution, Cycle to Work Scheme*, Tech Scheme*, Season Ticket Loan*, Gym Flex* (*after successfully completing probation)

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the design and development of SQL solutions
  • Deliver and maintain SQL solutions to operational teams
  • Understand, interpret and translate data
  • Assist in the creation of any necessary requirements documentation in order to support the development of the required solution using most appropriate tools
  • Able to investigate and understand the relationship between the underlying databases and the end user application UI
  • Mentor and coach less experienced colleagues
  • Share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members
  • Liaise with appropriate representatives and support teams to ensure that the solutions provided are fit for purpose at point of delivery and throughout the solutions life.?

Working Hours

35 hours per week Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm with 1 unpaid hour for lunch. This role is fully remote

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Highly numerate with previous experience in delivering SQL solutions
  • Expert T-SQL skills are essential
  • Strong experience of ETL from various source systems
  • Must have good analytical and communication skills
  • Willingness to work with and learn new/unfamiliar systems and technologies
  • Strong understanding of data and the way data is used within the Davies business

(Desirable) Technologies

  • Microsoft stack including Visual Studio and GIT
  • SQL Server
  • SSIS
  • Microsoft Office including VBA (desirable)
  • Azure Data Factory

(Desirable) A framework based upon the SFIA is applicable to this role and provides levelling for:

  • Junior Data Engineer
  • Data Engineer
  • Senior Data Engineer

  • Communicates in clear and concise manner, both written and verbal.

You must also:

  • Have good analytical skills, be methodical and accurate and show great attention to detail
  • Have the ability to build relationships at all stakeholder levels including business and IT staff, vendors and third party service providers
  • Be a good problem solver with proven ability to diagnose and resolve issues
  • Have exceptional prioritisation and problem solving skills.

You must also:

  • Have leadership skills, the ability to lead by example and be a role model to others
  • Communicates in clear and concise manner, both written and verbal
