The opportunity:
Leonardo has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Data Engineer that could be based at any of our major UK sites. We are looking for a Data Engineering Specialist to join a new area of the business on a permanent basis to provide expertise, advice, personnel development and strategic direction on subjects relating to Data.
Data will play a crucial role in the development of our next generation products. We are experiencing orders of magnitude increases in volumes data and, with the rising complexity of our products and the global environment within which they operate, corresponding increases in variety of data and associated technologies. This role is the result of our continued investment in developing our internal capability with data – and comes at a unique time where it will be possible to help shape our future direction.

Reporting to a Chief Systems Engineer, the Data Engineering Specialist would be responsible for:
- Providing Data Engineering expertise to this new area of business and advocating to its internal stakeholders.
- Designing, building and maintaining a new on-prem internal data platform
- Collaborating with the data scientists, domain experts and software engineers developing highly complex embedded software to translate their requirements into technical solutions
- Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of others in the field of Data Engineering
- Review existing programmes or projects for their Data Engineering practices and providing objective recommendations and critique
Supporting the Chief Systems Engineer and Engineering Management in team resource and capability planning. You really must have:
- Degree in a STEM based subject.
- Strong demonstratable experience of delivering Data Engineering-centric capability, products or services.
- Strong technical leadership experience but also can demonstrate team working skills.
- Strong experience of implementing best practice, transformation or change within a medium to large organisation in the field of Data Engineering.
- Strong experience of conducting knowledge sharing or knowledge transfer to others.
- Experience of developing and communicating roadmaps.
- Good problem-solving ability.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Commercially aware.
- Willingness to travel within the UK and possibly overseas.
- Due to the nature of our work, you must be capable of achieving full SC security clearance that requires 5 years UK residency as a minimum.
It would be nice if you had:
- Experience with Cloudera or similar distributed data tool stacks (Hadoop, Hive, Kafka, Spark, Oozie, NiFi)
- Experience with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) workloads
- Experience with on-prem and hybrid infrastructure with Azure being a plus
- Experience with air-gapped networks and multi-tenancy environments with tiered security
- Knowledge of MATLAB, Simulink, C, C++, python
- Knowledge of DevOps / MLOps practices
- Knowledge of the defence industry
- Knowledge of supporting best practice business processes such as Data Governance frameworks
