We are looking for a Data Protection Manager to champion and enable compliance with Data Protection regulation and support best practice across Samaritans. This is a brilliant role to shape compliance capability across the charity. You’ll be the first line of support for Data Protection issues and are responsible for ensuring Samaritans is able to demonstrate compliance.
Senior leaders are committed to the importance of Data Protection compliance, together with the Audit and Risk Committee. Enabling strong practice is key to building Samaritans’ ability to deliver its services, raise income and operate with maximum impact.
The Governance, Risk & Compliance team are collaborative, friendly, supportive, and focused on continuous improvement. Our Data Protection Manager will work alongside a Risk & Assurance Manager, Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Counsel and Governance Officer, reporting to the Head of Governance, Risk & Compliance.

Key Responsibilities:
• To act as the accountable contact for internal and external queries regarding Data Protection.
• The operate as the appointed Data Protection Officer; to act independently, offering expert Data Protection support to the organisation and, where relevant, reporting to executive management and Audit and Risk Committee on key data compliance matters.
• To actively demonstrate organisational compliance with Data Protection laws and regulations, enabling Samaritans to demonstrate its wider accountabilities.
• To ensure frameworks and process are in place to line support and advise to Samaritans staff and central Samaritans branches to enable Data Protection compliance. To provide general guidance on Samaritans’ approach to Data Protection through policy and procedures to affiliate Samaritans branches.
Skills and Experience:
• Previous experience in managing Data Protection compliance and/or other compliance and assurance activity in an organisation
• Able to work independently and prioritise workload effectively using a risk based approach
• Able to work collaboratively, including demonstrating leadership skills across multiple teams
• Able to explain difficult concepts and/or provide complex advice in simple and straightforward terms
• Expert knowledge of Data Protection legislation (desirable)
• Strong knowledge of cyber security risks and information security standards (desirable)
• Proven experience in managing Data Protection compliance, including data incidents and breaches (desirable)
• Professional qualification in Data Protection or other areas of compliance and assurance (desirable)
• Experience of working with or within the charity and/or not-for-profit sector and/or working with volunteers (desirable)
