Where you’ll be working

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat. 

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand. 

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

What you’ll be doing

Our new data, digital and communications ecosystem will generate vast increases in the volume and frequency of data collected from across our networks and assets. These systems provide data that enable us to be more proactive in how we manage our electricity networks to enable the UK's transition to Net Zero.  

Working with operational data like energy flow, usage and voltage, data associated with our network equipment like cables, overhead lines and switchgear or business, financial or process data you will develop your skills in Data Science to enable you to transform this data into useful information to be used to inform business decisions and future strategy. The skills developed will include energy network understanding, proficiency in a range of programming languages and the ability to utilise multiple algorithm methodologies in a real industry setting.

During your degree, you’ll do placements linked to your modules, providing you with the opportunity to see how your studies relate to real-life scenarios and giving you that additional dimension that you won’t get from a traditional undergraduate degree.

What you’ll bring

If you live in Scotland, you’ll do a BSc (Hons) Data Science at Heriot-Watt University. You’ll have four Highers at a minimum of a B, including Maths and Computing (or similar) or equivalent qualifications. We’ll also accept an HNC or Modern Apprentice in Computing or Engineering disciplines. For more information on entry requirements, check out the course using the link above. We’re taking a hybrid approach to working with your time split between university, home and the Glasgow office.

If you live in England, you’ll do a BSc in Data Science at Nottingham University. You’ll have three A Levels at a minimum of two Bs and a C, including Maths or equivalent qualifications. We’ll also accept Maths at Level 4 Distinction or Merit. We’re taking a hybrid approach to working with your time split between university, home and the Prenton office.

For both programmes, you’ll also need a driving licence (or be working towards it) as you’ll need to get to different sites both during and after your training period.
