Job description

Bloomberg News is seeking an editor to join the Data Visualisation team in London to cover weekend shifts. You'll collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom to pursue smart visualisation opportunities related to planned and unplanned news over weekends, and you'll create charts, maps and other creative graphics that help readers draw insights from data.
Relying on your sound news judgment, refined design sensibilities and technical knowledge, you'll inspire the team and the wider newsroom to execute inventive data-driven visual storytelling. Working Thursday through Monday, you'll report and produce your own data-driven graphics stories, both general assignments and coverage that develops over weekends, including breaking news. You'll work alongside and have support from other Data Visualisation reporters and editors during weekday shifts, and you'll leverage your own news judgment as you collaborate with news and enterprise editors on the weekend. On weekend shifts, you'll attend news meetings and coordinate across the global newsroom to help guide timely coverage supported by data and graphics.
Candidates eager to transition to a leadership role who can show an extensive background creating interactive Data Visualisations and who work well independently are encouraged to apply.
We'll trust you to:
  • Report, develop and produce original, compelling data visualizations across platforms and devices
  • Shape and edit graphics to publication
  • Collaborate with weekend newsroom leadership to understand coverage priorities and guide reporting teams toward data reporting and visualisations
  • Coordinate with Data Visualisation team leadership to spot opportunities that help us prepare for planned news and enterprise weekend coverage
  • Lead by example and inspire Data Visualisation reporters on the team by helping them to elevate their ideas while also offering your own
  • Possess interest in topics core to Bloomberg News coverage - including finance, markets, economics and government policy, among others - and an eagerness to develop subject-matter expertise in these areas

You'll need:
  • Exceptional news judgment with a passion for creating graphics and structuring visual narratives
  • Strong sense of visual design, layout, typography and user experience and familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Figma
  • Experience with data reporting, e.g. the ability to collect, manage, munge, explore and analyse data from various sources and formats using R, Python or other programmatic methods
  • Experience with front-end web development using modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript and rendering graphics in the browser
If you think you'd be a good fit to join us, submit an application and include a CV, a brief letter telling us about yourself and a portfolio that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of data journalism, graphic design and development. Include a link to your Github account if you have one.

Apply if you think we're a good match. We'll get in touch to let you know that the next steps are, but in the meantime feel free to have a look at:
