Job summary
The Special Care Dental Service in Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to invite Dental Therapists to apply for this role based in the Special Care Dental Clinic within the new Worthing Integrated Care Centre. This is a 30 hours a week post, however, the service will consider job share.
The successful applicant will be working in a large team, including with specialists and consultants in Special Care and Paediatric dentistry. The successful applicant will be utilising their entire scope of practice.
This post provides an excellent opportunity to develop clinical skills and explore other areas of personal development.
Main duties of the job
Main duties of the job
To provide high quality clinical dental care for adults and children with a wide range of special needs and/or high treatment needs both in a dental surgery and a domiciliary setting. Dental special needs encompasses patients with:
  • complex medical histories
  • learning difficulties
  • physical disabilities
  • mental disabilities or illness
  • high risk status or have infectious diseases
  • high levels of untreated decay
  • dentally anxious or phobic
  • pre-co-operative due to young age
  • challenging behaviour and/or behavioural problems

Job responsibilities
SCFT SCDS is a dental referral service for patients with special needs and those who have difficulty accessing General Dental Services. We also provide dental treatment on a domiciliary basis for housebound people and training in Oral Health Care.
The Special Care Dental Service is for patients with specific health and social care issues including:
  • Alcohol and drug misuse
  • Challenging behaviour / severe management difficulties
  • Child Protection Register and looked after children
  • Dental phobias
  • Homeless
  • Learning disabilities
  • Medical problems
  • Mental health diagnosis
  • Physical disabilities
  • Social problems

  • Utilisation of full scope of practice
  • Able to use initiative, prioritise and take responsibility for clinical work
