Job description

At THIS Institute (The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute), we believe efforts to improve care should always be based on the highest quality evidence. We bring together healthcare staff, patients, policymakers, and academics to provide clarity on what works in improving healthcare, what doesn't, and why. The Deputy Communications and Engagement Lead (maternity cover) plays a pivotal role in delivering of the institute's mission. The unprecedented range of challenges facing the NHS is consistently at the top of the political and media agenda, and how we can address the challenges facing the healthcare workforce, patient safety, and performance is one of the key questions of our time. In this role, you will assist with the design and implementation of an ambitious Communications and Engagement strategy that builds THIS' Institute's profile and reputation as a research institute that is grounded in the issues that matter most to NHS staff and patients, and advocates for better use of evidence in healthcare policy and practice. You will lead the institute's strategy for corporate and research communications. You will oversee, quality assure and sign off communications plans, messaging, and activity within defined areas of responsibility. In addition, you will lead our work to improve equity, diversity, and inclusion practices across all our Communications and Engagement activities. We are looking for a strategic thinker who can grasp complex academic ideas and communicate effectively. You will have a track record of developing and implementing high-profile Communications and Engagement strategies that draw on a range of communications tools and disciplines, including digital communications, public affairs, academic editorship and publishing, brand management, stakeholder engagement, internal communications, events management, marketing, and data management. This is a fixed-term contract until 10 December 2024, or on the return of the substantive post holder whichever is the earlier, to cover a period of maternity leave. We are open to structuring this role as either a full or part-time position and welcome applications for a minimum of three days (22.5 hours) a week. The role can be performed as a hybrid position: number of days in the office is negotiable but weekly attendance is expected.
