The Deputy data editor works closely with the data editorto deliver a world-class data journalism package for The Times and Sunday Times. They will bring stories to life with clean, clear and engaging graphics, interactives and data-led stories, ensuring all output remains true to the aesthetics of The Times and Sunday Times. They will work closely with senior editors on The Times and Sunday Times, including the news desks for both papers.
Responsibilities
Work as a senior journalist in the Times and Sunday Times newsrooms to commission stories for our daily digital editions, as well as long-term investigative projects and features packages
Pitch and deliver exclusive story ideas and investigations, and manage the development of these ideas with senior journalists
Assist the data editor with overseeing data projects across The Times and Sunday Times, working with senior editors from multiple departments
Assist the data editor with managing the data team to deliver digital graphics, interactives and data-led stories as agreed with the senior news and features editors and help to integrate the team into the wider newsrooms
Forward-plan, working with designers, production teams and journalists on long-range data-led projects and packages
Work collaboratively with all internal departments, including commercial, marketing, technology, production, distribution, finance and HR
Assist the data editor to control costs, helping to ensure the budget is managed as efficiently as possible to agreed objectives, ensuring all products are commercially viable
Help the data editor to lead and manage the data team, developing talent and supporting progression and assist with building the team rota
Help to lead the improvement of data literacy in the newsroom by designing and delivering a data training programme for journalists
Deputise for the Data Editor when required, represent the team at news conferences and attend meetings with senior editors
Skills and experience
Experienced journalist with strong news judgment and a demonstrable interest in news, current affairs, lifestyle and sport
Experience establishing strong working relationships and building credibility with senior managers, influencing editorial colleagues, leading thinking and generating story ideas
Excellent communication skills, can communicate effectively with all levels of seniority across the paper and with external industry contacts
Looks across the media industry to assess skills and compelling story formats
An understanding of Javascript/React.js/Node and a basic understanding of R is desirable
Proficiency in spreadsheets and statistical methods: collecting, summarising, analysing and interpreting variable numerical data using Excel or equivalent
Experience using visualisation technologies for digital graphics (eg D3, QGIS, Leaflet, Three.js, Adobe Illustrator)
Highly organised, able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy
A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
