The Department of People and Performance at Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest in the UK; with 80+ members of staff and over 1400 students across all levels. We deliver undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Human Resource Management, Business Psychology, Sports Business Management and Marketing and our flagship AMBA accredited MBA.
The Department is both teaching and research intensive, with a strong focus on applied learning. About the role
The Deputy Head ofPeople and Performance is a senior academic leadership role within the department. The role holder will work closely with the Head of Department to shape and lead the strategic direction of the Department. In addition, the role holder will oversee the operational priorities of the department, working closely with other members of the department's leadership team. You will have excellent leadership skills, ambition, and experience to support the development and delivery of the department's strategic objectives and have a high commitment to excellence in education and research. Academic credibility is important, and you will have a sustained track record in education and or research, combined with excellent skills in team working and collaboration.
The Deputy Head of Department role is fixed term for four years with the role holder reverting back to a permanent post within the Department at the end of this term. It is expected that the role holder will maintain an academic profile on one of our two pathways (education or research). The Deputy Head of Department role carries with it a 75% workload allocation and there is an expectation that the post holder would contribute to teaching within the department.
About you:
Essential skills:
- Have a strong academic standing in research and/or teaching.
- Be experienced in managing the effective deployment of staffing resources.
- Having excellent operational knowledge and experience within a HE or comparable setting.
- Experience of providing leadership, supervision and mentoring to colleagues.
- Have an in-depth understanding of the subject including recent developments in the field.
Desirable:
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate effectively, develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Have good diplomatic skills with experience of inspiring others to succeed.
- Have a commitment and evidence of ongoing personal and professional development.
