Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Logistics and General Munitions (GM) Support Operative, based at Defence Munitions (DM) Longtown.

As a Logistics and General Munitions Support Operative, you will work on a range of tasks related to Defence Munitions, ranging from receipting, storage issuing and managing our inventory. You will also have opportunities to work on a range of associated documentation and IT Support, all to ensure that our Armed Forces are correctly supported and supplied in a timely and effective fashion.

In this role, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, working towards tight timelines and critical ammunition outputs for DM. You’ll work independently and within a team on a range of warehousing tasks and operating a variety of Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE). You’ll normally work under supervision using IT systems, and sometimes be required to work outdoors. In this role you’ll be operating a variety of Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE), vehicles, and be proficient in the use of hand tools after training.

Working in a process building and warehouses, this role is full of variety and will give you the opportunity to learn more about Defence tasks, the intricacies of working with these items, and the different ways which we transport our goods around the world. We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated hard working and organised individual who can work well as part of a team in a pressurised customer focused environment to tight timescales.

We will train you to be knowledgeable in non-explosive inventory and warehousing, who can readily engage with a wide level of stakeholders. The standard hours for the position are 37 per week, Monday – Thursday 08:00 – 16:30, and Friday 08:00 – 13:00. You may also be required to travel for training to other Defence Munitions locations in the UK. Reasonable notice will be given, with flexibility and a family-friendly approach in mind.

Above all, you will need to be accountable and diligent about safety processes and procedures to closely follow the guidance that means ammunition and explosives are handled in a safe, effective, and consistent way.

What you’ll be doing

  • Support General Non-Explosives Processing in meeting production targets with due regard to safety, time, cost and quality.
  • Handle Ammunition Boxes and General stores in a safe and efficient manner to comply with Safe Systems of Work
  • Assist with all Logistics and storage activities to ensure that customers’ requirements are met on time and in full.
  • Adopt a multi-skilled philosophy and approach in supporting wider depot operations and activities in accordance with local and departmental policy and procedures. Typically this may include activities such as General Non-Explosive processing and Logistics/warehousing duties including the operation of Mechanical Handling Equipment (MHE).
  • Ensure General Stores are handled in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with Safe Systems of Work including but not limited to authorised procedures, risk assessments, manual handling & Care of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
  • Ensure that all issues and receipts of stores are thoroughly checked, paperwork is correctly completed, and all palletised loads are prepared and documented.
  • Carry out before, during and after pre-use checks on Mechanical Handling Equipment to be able to operate various driving duties, including loading, and unloading, delivering, or collecting units, and be proficient in the use of hand tools/wood working equipment as required for their duties. Full training will be provided adhering to the relevant organisation’s Health and Safety regulations.
  • As directed, assist other team members, or carry out additional ad-hoc tasks appropriate to the role.
  • Undertake tasks using our IT systems, including recording absences, attendance and completing online training courses.

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Basic understanding of IT systems

It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Experience in working with stock and/or in a warehouse environment
  • Experience in Mechanical Handling (training will be provided)
