As a Detective Constable you will be responsible for investigating complex cases and working hard to uncover the hidden truths to ensure you bring justice to those who need it most. You will play a key role in providing critical support for victims of crime, whilst engaging with the community to build trust and cooperation to lead a successful outcome for each case you manage.
You could find yourself working in various departments from the Public Protection Unit (PPU), Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), Homicide and Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU). No two cases or days are the same working as a Detective.
Being a Detective is a demanding and fast paced role, but the job also comes with huge rewards and job satisfaction. We are looking for individuals who have the curiosity and drive to follow every lead and ultimately discover the truth behind every situation.
About the Detective ConstableDegree Holder Entry Programme
Our Detective ConstableDegree Holder Entry Programme is a fantastic opportunity which is open to Degree Holders. Whilst training as a Detective Constable, you will also earn a graduate diploma in Professional Policing, which is recognised internationally!
The majority of your learning will be completed 'on the job' and digitally with your face-to-face classroom style learning which will be based in Birmingham. As you're completing a level 6 qualification there is the expectation that part of the learning will be completed in your own time.
When you're not studying you'll be working alongside your colleagues as a Police Constable being the face of West Midlands Police in our local communities.
Your learning will involve training as a Uniformed Police Constable firstly and as a Police Officer you will be required to wear uniform and work with teams such as Response and Neighbourhood, dealing directly with the community and responding to emergency calls on the frontline, on a 24/7 shift pattern.
Your second year will be more tailored towards the Detective pathway and involve training with other teams such as FCID, learning more in depth knowledge about how to carry out the role of a Detective and investigate and manage cases moving forward.
Ensuring our Police Officers have plenty of development opportunities is high on our agenda; once you have successfully completed the two year training period you will become a fully qualified Detective, you will be able to apply for promotion as well as look to specialise in specific areas including Counter Terrorism, Serious and Organised Crime, Fraud and County Lines.

You are not able to progress for more than one entry route; please apply for the route which is most suited to you, this includes both Police Constable and Detective Constable positions.

You will start on £28,551, per annum and this will increase with yearly increments meaning you can earn up to £46,044 within 7 years of starting your training!

Are you Eligible?
Qualifications:
  • Have achieved a Degree (Level 6) or above in any subject at any grade
  • OR be in the final academic year of your degree. Unfortunately, if you do not achieve your degree you will not be eligible for the DHEP route but may be able to transfer your application to the Degree Apprenticeship route (PCDA) dependant on qualifications
Only final Degree certificates will be accepted, and these must be attached to your application.
Medical/Fitness:
When applying for the role candidates must be able/ready to run the bleep test to a level of 5.4
Residency and Nationality:
Candidates are required to be UK resident for the last three years. You must be a British, Irish or EEA National, alternatively you must have no restrictions on your right to live and work in the UK.
