Job description

Chief Constables' Message
We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.
We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.
We wish you all the very best with your application.
Chief Constable Tim De Meyer & Chief Constable Jo Shiner
The Role and Key Responsibilities
An exciting opportunity has arisen for external Detective Constable to join the Surrey & Sussex Major Crime Team (MCT) based at Woking Police Station.
Specialist Crime Command are looking to recruit a highly motivated and capable Detective Constable within the Major Crime Team, to work on the most varied, serious and high-profile investigations across Surrey and Sussex. 2023 saw some hugely complex and varied investigations incorporated into MCT which, if successful, you would be immediately deployed into.
Minority ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by homicide and violent crime. The Surrey and Sussex MCT is constantly seeking to enhance the service that is offered to the victims and families of the most heinous crimes. We recognise that a diverse team of investigators not only increases community confidence, but enhances our team from within, bringing unique perspectives and a broader range of outlooks to reflect the communities that are most likely to be impacted by homicide and violent crime.
As an MCT DC, you will be required to work as a member of the Enquiry Team undertaking the investigation of homicides and other incidents of MAJOR CRIME. The role is very varied, with a focus on quality and meticulous investigation, under the key umbrellas of MAJOR CRIME evidence gathering. You will undertake the essential Case Officer role for homicides and other serious offences, working under the direction of the Detective Sergeant Office Manager (OM) and Senior Investigating Officer (SIO).
Candidates applying for the role are requested to submit a succinct application of no more than 750 words, explaining why they would like to be considered for the role. Candidates should clearly outline their experience in case management of serious/complex crime and ownership as OIC.
Skills & Experience
Key Responsibilities
Perform the role of Case Officer for serious complex MAJOR CRIME investigations including homicide, manslaughter, kidnap and extortion, and any other crime types investigated by MCT. This is widely considered to be one of the most rewarding Detective roles in policing.
Undertake core MAJOR CRIME functions and lead on evidential recovery for areas such as CCTV, telecoms, digital forensics, interviews, third party material and so on.
As part of an enquiry team you will bring ideas, experiences, cultural or community understanding and investigative expertise to team meetings and utilise skills and ability in moving investigations forwards.
Meet with relevant victims of and witnesses to crime with a view to securing and preserving evidence for use in any subsequent inquiry. Communication is essential to this, so we are seeking Detectives who understand the needs and vulnerabilities of witnesses. Often witnesses are reluctant through fear or reprisal, cultural barriers, or mistrust in Policing whereby the MCT Detective will be required to build confidence and trust to secure evidence. Language skills would be advantageous but not essential to the role.
Undertake key tasks allocated in the course of a MAJOR CRIME investigation. The role is not solely a task-based function, every member of the team has a voice and the capacity to develop their enquiries which has an invaluable contribution to the investigation.
Attend court as Case Officer or if required to give evidence in relation to any aspect of the investigation. This will include preparing and submitting case files to HM Coroner for use in the Coronial process, and to attend and give evidence at any relevant Inquest as necessary and required.
Make positive contributions to operational briefings, providing relevant and concise updates to other members of the team in order to add value to the investigative process.
MCT provides an opportunity for training in specialist functions as required by the team e.g. Digital Media Investigator (DMI), FLO, Tier 3 Advanced Interviewer and Tier 5 Interview Coordinator.
Work alongside colleagues in other SCC teams and other departments including the Exhibits & Disclosure Team, Serious Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), Economic Crime Unit (ECU), Cyber Crime, Intelligence and Forensics at times of high demand and as directed by supervisors and to liaise effectively with other police forces and partner agencies as necessary and required.
Undertake other duties appropriate to the rank and character of work as may be reasonably required including working alongside divisional teams at times of high demand.Accredited PIP Level 2 Detective Constable
Substantial, proven and well evidenced experience in criminal investigation, conducting interviews and case building.
Proven ability to analyse problems, make sound operational decisions and have a high level of persistence and self-motivation to see an investigation through to conclusion.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence and ability to negotiate and influence others through verbal and written communication.
A team player with a professional approach and an appreciation of the importance of the work undertaken.
Why Work With Us?
MCT is committed to the principles of equality, diversity and human rights, ensuring zero tolerance of racism in all forms.
All members of staff are expected to actively demonstrate their commitment to these principles and be encouraged to challenge unacceptable behaviour in relation to the protected characteristics or for any other reason of difference.
Additional specialist skills such as FLO, SCAIDP (or equivalent child abuse investigation), Tier 3 specialist interviewer, Tier 5 interview advisor would be advantageous but are not a requirement for this position. Training in these skills, once part of MCT are encouraged.
Experience in homicide and MAJOR CRIME investigations, including use of HOLMES, would be advantageous but not a pre-requisite for the role.
