We welcome applications from substantive Detective Sergeants for this exciting opportunity within our Counter Terrorism Policing team. You will join our Field Intelligence department, a unique team at the heart of counter terrorism investigations.

You will lead on the tactical delivery of both covert and overt Intelligence Operations relating to national security. The role supports partner intelligence agencies in managing the risk posed-by international terrorism, Northern Ireland-related terrorism, ERWT (Extreme Right Wing Terrorism), LASIT (Leftwing and Self-Initiated Terrorism), espionage and other national security issues. It also plays a vital role in ensuring the national counter-terrorism network is effectively linked into local policing.

To be successful in this role, you will be a qualified detective with experience of supervising investigative or intelligence work including covert techniques, intelligence development and management of risk.

Please note that this role is part of a national, regional and local network and as a result you may be required to travel for business purposes mainly across the south east region and occasionally throughout the UK. Therefore, the successful candidate will require a full UK driving licence.

Due to the nature of our work, security is of paramount importance to us and therefore it will be necessary to pass and maintain enhanced security vetting level, DV andhave resided in the UK for the past 10 years. Exemptions may apply for overseas or other diplomatic service (with HM Government), and studying abroad.  In addition you must be a British National and able to provide documentary evidence of this.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead an intelligence team to deliver field-based Intelligence Operations.
  • Acquire, assess and evaluate intelligence relating to national security and in particular relating to groups or individuals involved in international terrorism, Northern Ireland-related terrorism, ERWT (Extreme Right Wing Terrorism), LASIT (Left-wing and Self-Initiated Terrorism) and espionage.
  • Acquire, assess and evaluate intelligence to assist in the preservation of public order for large scale planned events in support of the home force where the event is held.
  • Support the investigation of terrorism offences, and a growing area of work that is related to Counter State Threat.
  • Provide support to spontaneous, critical and major incidents relating to terrorism, ERWT and LASIT.
  • Develop and lead on plans to manage emerging risks or residual threats to national security posed by individuals, groups or locations in the South East.
  • Develop effective working relationships across the CONTEST strands (Prevent, Pursue, Protect, Prepare), local forces that make up CTPSE and partners (local, regional, national) to counter the threat posed by international terrorism.
  • Represent CTPSE at intelligence and operational meetings within the South East or nationally as required.
  • Provide resilience to other intelligence supervisor roles within CTPSE and the DI as required.

Essential role based training

  • The Intelligence department operates 24/7.Outside of core hours the intelligence department requires the support of an on call function and weekend working.
  • The post holder should be aware that the role may require exposure to violent, disturbing or extreme material.
  • The role requires understanding of the correct investigation and handling of matters relating to the interception of communications, the Official Secrets Act, and such other statutes that the Head of the CTPSE may direct.
  • CT Induction Course.
  • There may be the requirement for further training to ensure resilience in CTPSE, for example Operations Room manager training; FUSION.

Required knowledge/skills
Essential

  • A qualified detective with experience supervising investigative or intelligence work including covert techniques, intelligence development and management of risk.
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise a team ensuring workload is prioritised efficiently and effectively. Able to assimilate and assess large volumes of information to make sound operational and administrative decisions, dealing with several complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to communicate information effectively at strategic and tactical levels and with people at all levels of the organisation, partners and outside agencies.
  • Able to recognise sensitive information and maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Able to demonstrate innovation and problem solving skills and apply them to problems which may be dynamic and/or where the requirement is vague.
  • Take ownership for your area of business, be adaptable and flexible to prioritise tasks and organise work yourself in order to respond to the greatest areas of risk and threat.
  • Highly motivated to perform the role with little supervision, being able to manage time efficiently, self-task, to work well under pressure and deal with several different issues at once.
