Developing Nuclear Regulator

Region: North West, South East
City/Town: Penrith, Wallingford
Building/Site: Ghyll Mount, Red Kite House

Job description

Do you want to work for an organisation that values difference and includes everyone?

Then the Environment Agency is the organisation for you! We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share

At the Environment Agency, we are responsible for regulating the disposal of radioactive waste across the nuclear industry in England. Whether it be an operational power station, or a new build project, our regulators work with nuclear operators to ensure the highest levels of environmental protection are achieved. As a Developing Nuclear Regulator, you’ll assist with this work. The role’s not just about waste. You’ll be expected to develop your understanding of the businesses and technology we regulate, how they operate and the impact they could have on people and the environment.

We are looking for someone with some understanding of the nuclear industry and the determination and enthusiasm to further develop your skills. You'll have access to training courses and the support of colleagues to help you achieve this. At the Environment Agency, we are committed to the people and places we serve. Interaction with members of the public is an essential part of the role. You’ll also need to be willing to play your part in responding to incidents both within the nuclear field and across other functions.

You’ll be expected to show some understanding of relevant legislation and an appreciation of the challenges the industry faces.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and workplace adjustments will be available.

The team

Our nuclear regulation groups are based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire and Penrith, Cumbria. We have teams focused on a number of programmes. These include reactor sites, decommissioning, fuel manufacture, assessing new reactor designs and radiation incident management. You'll be supporting these teams whilst developing your own skills and knowledge of the nuclear industry. We encourage flexible working, but you'll need to regularly attend our offices and regulated sites.

Experience/skills required

We are looking for someone with an understanding of the nuclear industry and current environmental challenges. You'll have the determination and enthusiasm to drive your own personal development and understanding of the industry. You'll understand the Environment Agency's role in regulating the nuclear industry.

You should be able to demonstrate a well-organised approach, with excellent communication, technical leadership, team-working and IT skills.

You’ll need an awareness of relevant legislation and an appreciation of the challenges the industry faces. You’ll understand modern environmental challenges and issues. You should be a great communicator and have experience of:

  • Programme and project management to achieve results
  • Influencing and persuading others
  • Communicating effectively- working with members of the public

All Environment Agency staff receive training to support our response to major incidents.

Please note we do not assess CVs. Answers to these competency questions will be used for interview selection so ensure you draw out your skills and experience in your responses.
