Type: Temporary to Permanent
Salary: £14.33/hr, ~£35,000/annum equivalent
Hours of Work: 37.5hrs/week, Monday to Friday

Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Diagnostic Vehicle Technician to join our Fleet and Operations Support team within the Clinical Operations directorate. In this vital role, you will be responsible for ensuring our fleet of vehicles remain in optimal condition to support our 24/7 healthcare services. Your expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical and electrical issues will be crucial in maintaining the availability and safety of our ambulances, patient transport vehicles, and administrative vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive inspections and diagnostics on a variety of vehicles to identify faults and malfunctions.
- Perform advanced mechanical, electrical, and electronic repairs, including engine and transmission overhauls, brake system repairs, and diagnostic troubleshooting, using specialised equipment.
- Utilise diagnostic software and tools to analyse vehicle systems and interpret fault codes.
- Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks, including servicing, oil changes, and component replacements, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Health & Safety Regulations.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians and apprentices, sharing knowledge and best practices to enhance team performance.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety Regulations and maintain a clean and organised work environment.
- Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for the procurement of parts and equipment, ensuring cost-effective solutions and timely repairs.
- Keep accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts usage, labour hours, and vehicle histories.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to stay abreast of new technologies and industry best practices.
- Mentor, support, and guide apprentices and Vehicle Technicians as required.
- Use diagnostic tools to identify problems with various vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems.
- Carry out MOT inspections/repairs as required.
- Communicate with clinical and operational users to gain a full understanding of the nature of faults or problems with the vehicle and equipment. Assess the seriousness of the issues and respond appropriately to the urgency of the requests.
- Provide clear, concise, and factual information to support vehicle equipment processes, which may assist with purchasing, maintenance, repair, and service reports.
- Analyse diagnostic data, interpret error codes, and perform tests to pinpoint the root cause of problems using technical knowledge, experience, and problem-solving skills.
- Inform the Workshop Manager promptly in cases of unplanned failures, unusual events, or events not previously experienced.
- Complete all necessary documentation, including Job Cards, Service Sheets, and Parts Sheets, ensuring timely submission.
- Order and receive parts from external suppliers, utilise online mechanical ordering systems, and understand vehicle service and repair manuals.
- Maintain compliance with all statutory requirements relating to the disposal of waste produced as a result of vehicle activities, including waste oil, oil filters, brake fluid, batteries, and waste paint products.
- Maintain detailed records of diagnostic findings, repairs performed, and parts replaced for future maintenance reference.
- Report clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly, using the Trust’s Risk Assessments and Incident Reporting System.
- Attend mandatory training identified by the manager or Trust, including Stryker Training, Bosch Technician Training, Ferno Training, Jactone Training, Health & Safety Training, and VB Suspension Training.
- Supervise, instruct, and provide guidance, support, and direction to apprentices, semi-skilled staff, and new employees.
- Ensure high standards of autonomy, using specialist knowledge to act on interpreting technical policies and procedures related to vehicles and equipment.
