British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Diesel Power Generator Technician to join our amazing team based in Antarctica. BAS delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research and support teams and keep everyone safe!

Our skilled science, operational and support staff based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, work together to deliver research that uses the Polar Regions to advance our understanding of Earth as a sustainable planet. Through our extensive logistic capability and know how BAS facilitates access for the British and international science community to the UK polar research operation. Numerous national and international collaborations, combined with an excellent infrastructure help sustain a world leading position for the UK in Antarctic affairs. You’ll be joining our Antarctic Estates department which provides everything needed to support life in Antarctica and is made up of skilled individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Together we make a formidable team that can deal with any situation, from servicing large refrigeration systems, to welding fuel pipelines. We take great pride in our work and are dedicated to support of polar science.

You’ll take responsibility for supporting continuous power demand at our research stations. BAS operates 5 Stations which vary in size, all sites operate on 400v 3ph produced from a variety of generator size from 144kw down to 50kw. As well as the heavy diesel maintenance, you will be responsible for generator fuelling and monitoring of bulk fuel storage.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop. As part of the Estates team, you will receive training specific to your role, but also in areas that benefit the station as a whole, such as: Fire search and rescue; advanced medical training; and deep field Antarctic survival techniques.

BAS operates five sites from smaller domestic size sites such as Bird Island to more complex stations such as Halley VI with CHP systems and BMS controls.

Your main responsibilities will include:

· Bulk fuel storage, husbandry and station fuel transfer delivery

· Maintenance of tools and resources required to complete all maintenance and repair works

· Upkeep of workshops and plant areas

Most of our stations are undergoing constant modification and improvement, this can range from something large like the Discovery building at Rothera, to something small like the installation of Solar panels at Bird Island. But the most exciting work is still to be done, as we move towards reducing our Carbon footprint to net zero, the challenges are increasing and we are welcoming people who have knowledge, experience or just a passion for renewable and sustainable energy production.

For the role of Diesel Power Generator Technician, we are looking for somebody who:

· Has served a full apprenticeship, BTEC, relevant City & Guilds or NVQ

· Has practical post qualification/apprenticeship site experience

· Is able to work individually and as part of a team
