Job description

IPPR is seeking an enterprising and capable communicator with a strong understanding of all kinds of media and of the news agenda, to help us land bold ideas for policy change with a varied range of target audiences.

We are an independent charity seeking to shape the public debate and achieve social, democratic, environmental, and economic progress. That means maximising all the communications tools at our disposal to disseminate our research findings and policy proposals across the political spectrum, and so to help make today’s bold ideas tomorrow’s common sense.

With experience of working in communications, journalism, public affairs or a related role, and a working understanding of UK politics and media, you will be a key member of the IPPR Communications team, reporting to the Senior Digital and Media Officer and under the leadership of the Director of News and Communications.

You will have an interest in public policy and will engage with journalists, read research reports, spot top lines, craft news releases and think about how to place stories.

You will also work to enhance and deliver IPPR’s social media and digital outputs. You will have excellent ability to develop those technical skills you do not already possess, including to create digital outputs (such as infographics and quote cards); to make short videos and photograph events; to jointly manage multiple social media channels; and to help maintain and update the website.

You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work independently within a larger team, managing a demanding and varied workload.

The post will be based in IPPR’s London office (with at least two days a week in the office) and will involve being available to handle media inquiries out of hours and over weekends, including bank holidays as part of a rota. You will also be required to undertake occasional travel throughout the UK for relevant events and conferences.

IPPR is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community and from applicants with a range of professional and lived experiences. As an organisation engaging in critical debate about economic and social policy, we value the creativity and range of perspectives that a diverse team can provide.

As part of our commitment to flexible working we will consider a range of options for the successful applicant to fill the post. All options can be discussed at interview stage.

Those seriously considering an application are welcome to find out more about the role by contacting David Wastell d. wastell @ ippr. org or Liam Evans l. evans @ ippr. org for an informal chat.

Before applying please go to our website to read the information pack that includes the job description and person specification.

Please provide a CV with a personal statement of no more than two pages. The statement should address, under separate headings, why you want the role and how you meet the attributes set out in the person specification.

The CV and statement should be combined into one PDF document and returned to applications @ ippr. org. In order to complete your application please also complete IPPR’s diversity and inclusion monitoring form
