Digital Project Manager

Reporting to Transformation Office Manager

Based in: Wilton, Teesside

Position overview:

There has never been a more exciting time to work for Sembcorp Energy UK. As part of our Sembcorp Industries objectives of moving from brown to green we are looking at a programme of work across our UK business that will continue our transformation to be a leader in the delivery of sustainable energy services. Over the last 5 years there has been significant expansion of the business through the acquisition of the UK’s largest flexible generator and an ongoing project to build 150MW of batteries at the Wilton site. Over the coming years we plan to continue and accelerate this journey with a growth in renewables (including battery energy storage), the transition to sustainable energy production and expansion of urban solutions.

We currently operate a hybrid delivery model, due to the diversity of the portfolio of programmes and projects. These range from large scale investments in digital technologies at the forefront of data science and optimisation, to projects addressing legacy and operational issues, to large scale construction of nationally significant infrastructure.

At the heart of these delivery streams is our Transformation Office which provides the management to define and deliver the portfolio. It operates several critical functions; building best practice to support a common set of methodologies, ensuring we plan strategically and ensuring we have the governance in place to control and manage the diverse range of programmes and projects.

This role will play a key part in coordinating, directing, and overseeing the development and execution of a range of complex Digital Projects and the delivery of additional capabilities to existing system through a product development methodology. Working across all areas of the UK business they will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including software development, data science, cyber security, and IT to transform the digital capability within Sembcorp Energy UK.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading the development and execution of Digital Projects from end-to-end.
  • Leading the development of additional capabilities for existing digital products.
  • Coordinating and monitoring projects and change activities to ensure they meet the required quality and deliver to schedule and cost.
  • Ensuring effective project structures and governance frameworks are employed.
  • Managing both internal and external software developers.
  • Ensuring requirements are effectively and accurately captured and communicated to developers.
  • Ensuring effective strategies and plans are developed and maintained to manage risks, issues, stakeholders, and quality.
  • Proactively managing dependencies between other projects and business as usual activities.
  • Supporting and mentoring the Project Sponsor or Product Owner.
  • Reporting project performance to the Transformation Office.
  • Supporting the production of business cases for emergent projects.
  • Supporting and mentoring other Project Managers and Business Change Managers, including some without formal training/experience.

Essential:

  • Project management qualification, preferably digital related such as Agile or Scrum.
  • Demonstrable experience of Digital Project of product management.
  • Demonstrate success in delivery of complex projects in leveraged environments and using multiple partners.
  • Knowledge of project management tools and techniques specifically planning, reporting and governance.
  • Knowledge of Project Management software packages.
  • Experience of building and leading effective project teams across a complex business in a matrix delivery model.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with business and technology colleagues.
  • Ability to manage remote teams and work with multiple diverse stakeholders, both internal and external, including virtual international development teams.
  • Experience of working with and influencing senior business leaders or Project Sponsors for complex Digital Projects.

Preferred Skills & Characteristics

  • Effective leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to lead through influence, build relationships and create a sense of community amongst the members of the project team.
  • Good knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring, and controlling Digital Projects.
  • Sound business case development and approvals skills.
  • Good knowledge of project management methodologies including Agile, Scrum and Waterfall.
  • Understanding of procurement process including negotiating with third parties.
  • Good knowledge of budgeting and resource allocation procedures.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically and develop effective approaches to complex digital change.
  • Proven track record of working in a matrix structure and collaborating with a wide network of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate and interact at senior levels within a multi-national company.
  • Familiarisation with Microsoft Azure DevOps.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle.
  • Experience of the delivery of projects in the utilities or energy sector would be advantageous.
  • An understanding of energy trading and the supporting systems is desirable.
