Job description

The Central Statistics Office was established in 1949 as Ireland's national statistical office. Over recent years, the CSO has grown both in the scope of its work and the scale of its workforce. It is no longer an organisation that exclusively compiles and publishes Official Statistics but rather extracts knowledge, evidence and insight from multiple linked and integrated data sources and presents it in an accessible and user-friendly manner and provides data related services across the broader Civil and Public Service.

The position of Director General (DG) is a statutory post under the Statistics Act 1993 and combines management and professional responsibilities. As Head of the CSO the DG is responsible, as a top level Civil Servant for the management and strategic leadership of the organisation. As “Accounting Officer” the DG also has some specific obligations and responsibilities in relation to accountability to the Oireachtas for the work and expenditure of the Office. On a professional level, the DG is effectively the “Head of Profession” or “Chief Statistician” in regard to all aspects of the production of Official Statistics in Ireland.

The person appointed will have:

  • a proven track record as a leader and senior manager in a large or complex organisation in either the public or private sector
  • a proven ability to network, engage and influence both at national and international level
  • a sound knowledge and understanding of, or the ability to acquire quickly an understanding of, statistical methodology as it applies to the production of Official Statistics
  • the ability to speak authoritatively and authentically on all matters relating to Official Statistics especially in the context of an evolving Data Stewardship role
  • the ability to present statistical results and concepts, both orally and in writing, in a confident, authentic and professional manner to the full range of users
  • a good understanding of the social, political and economic environments and their impact on the demand for evidence and insight

Experience which demonstrates a high level of numeracy and acumen in handling and interpreting statistical data would be a decided advantage. It is also highly desirable that the appointee should hold a relevant third level qualification in a quantitative discipline (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics).

This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.
