Director of Pastoral Development

An opportunity has arisen for a Director of Pastoral Development to join the archdiocese.

The post-holder will strategically and operationally oversee the Pastoral Development function of the Archdiocese by providing support and resources to the local church and help identify future needs.

The focus of the role is on the following areas:

  • Mission Development | Enabling development of local mission plans by parishes and deaneries within the parameters of the Pastoral Plan and Church's mission.
  • Catechesis | Development of catechetical strategies, procurement of resources, training of catechists.
  • Ordained Ministry Development | Supporting the vicariate for clergy, vocations and the ongoing formation of priests.
  • Laity Development | Adult formation and training ranging from subject-relevant skills and knowledge to spirituality, networking and personal development.
  • Catholic Social Action | Co-ordinating the work of the Archdiocese relating to social justice and environmental issues compatible with Catholic Social Teaching, in keeping with Pope Francis’ encyclical 'Laudato Si’.
  • Stewardship | Helping the local Church to plan for a sustainable future by harnessing the gifts of time, talent and treasure.

To thrive in this role you would need a sounds working knowledge of the Catholic faith and experience of project and change management.

You will lead a small team of professionals who are committed to supporting the delivery of the Pastoral Plan and will be a member of the Senior Management Team providing strategic direction to the Archdiocese.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Mission Strategy & Planning
1. To develop mission and pastoral strategies, policies and plans in line with the directions of the Archbishop and Trustees (and congruent with any overarching diocesan plan).
2. To promote understanding of a holistic view of mission – faithful, evangelistic and social.
3. To oversee and implement work with parishes and deaneries to develop their own local mission and plans – on ministry, structures, resources, activities and process.
4. To embed Christian stewardship into the mission life of the church.
5. To develop the leadership and organisational capabilities of the local church (both clergy and lay) to shape and deliver their plans.
6. To procure or develop resources to support parish development.
7. To support the relevant Episcopal Vicars, and the Chief Operating Officer, in aspects of wider strategic planning.
8. Research and evaluate projects (internal and external) to develop learning on successful mission and pastoral strategies. 

Formation and Training
1. To oversee the development and delivery of a comprehensive catechesis programme.
2. To oversee the procurement, or development, of high-quality catechetical resources which support the mission and development needs of the local church.
3. To oversee training programmes for accredited and non-accredited ministries.
4. To identify training needs (for existing and novel ministries etc.) arising from the mission and pastoral planning activity.
5. To support vocations and clergy CPD where requested by the relevant senior clergy.

Departmental Management
1. To develop departmental strategies and plans to deliver on the broad areas of departmental responsibility.
2. To manage the Pastoral Development Department, overseeing the work of staff.
3. To develop the capacity of the Parish Development Department through coaching, training and review.

Strategic operations
1. To support relevant governance structures.
2. To contribute to the overall management of Archdiocesan operations as directed by the Chief Operating Officer.
3. To identify opportunities for cross-departmental working to deliver integrated services to the local church.

General
1. Where necessary, attend, support and contribute to in house and external training programmes to aid continuous individual development.
2. At all times act in a professional and appropriate manner and actively promote the ethos of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
3. To undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required of you that are commensurate with your level of responsibility and experience.
