Job description

Are you a leader who can take our business forward to become exemplar and industry-leading in Process Safety?

Working in this senior role, you will lead the Process Safety strategy across the business, interfacing with both internal and external key stakeholders on a regular basis with additional support from our own internal Process Safety specialists.

What you'll do

As the Director of Process Safety, you will be accountable for the development of a compliant and progressive Process Safety strategy, where you will lead, engage and work collaboratively with directors, business leaders, Process Safety specialists, and additional key stakeholders to ensure the strategy is successfully implemented. You will be able to distil and communicate complicated topics and issues to a wide audience.

You will lead the development and implementation of a Process Safety management system focused on regulatory compliance, in particular COMAH and DSEAR, effective management of Process-related risks, reporting and continuous improvement. This will include the utilisation of Process Safety information to identify hazards and develop controls, the effective development of operating procedures, training of employees, maintenance of Process equipment, emergency response, consequence analysis and risk assessments.

Being the primary point of contact with the Competent Authority and other regulatory bodies, you will also ensure senior leaders, key stakeholders, and the Board Safety Committee are kept up to date with Process Safety deliverables and progress.

You will provide independent oversight and will report to executive and relevant senior leadership teams, as well as provide impartial and direct support to Process Safety specialists and other stakeholders on Process Safety-related matters.

What you'll need

As a self-sufficient leader, you will have operated at a senior level and will be able to drive forward strategic change in Process Safety whilst also interpreting high-level company goals, procedures, budgets, and relevant legislation.

You will have considerable experience working at a senior level within Process Safety, either within the water industry or a similar regulated industry. You will be passionate about improving safety processes and systems, while possessing the ability to think both strategically and tactically, switching between modes and adapting to situations as they develop.

Strong influencing and communication skills are essential.

In addition, you will have the following qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • a chemical engineering or an equivalent process-related degree
  • chartered status and membership of a relevant industry body
  • worked in a leadership role driving Process Safety along with the development and integration of a Process Safety management system within an organisation
  • a proven track record of implementing Process Safety processes to achieve core business objectives
  • the ability to engage with internal and external key stakeholders and leading change
  • experience with presenting at board level
  • liaised and engaged with a Competent Authority and regulatory authorities
  • extensively worked in an explosion safety engineering environment and strategically implemented effective methods of hazard analysis, risk reduction and effective leadership
  • demonstrable experience of working in a high-risk environment, especially gas or biogas industries
  • regularly dealt with statutory obligations, requirements, and restrictions of COMAH, DSEAR and ATEX
  • developed and implemented systems to meet ISO standards
  • knowledge and experience of high hazard risk management and mitigation in design.
