Job description

UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

Director of School Operations

The University of Manchester is recognised globally for its pioneering research, breadth of teaching and learning and for its commitment to social responsibility. The world’s big challenges demand urgent action – we’re working across boundaries and disciplines to create healthier, more equal futures; helping to eradicate poverty; ensuring energy supply for future generations; and protecting our planet for the years to come.

In 2024 we’re celebrating our bicentenary: 200 years of education and innovation. This milestone event is an exciting time to reflect on the past, recognising our key discoveries, pioneering ideas and world firsts, while looking forward to what our third century could bring.

The University of Manchester is one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK, divided into three Faculties, each of which comprises a number of Schools with powerful reputations for teaching and research success. Our sheer size and scale mean we can offer unparalleled opportunities for interdisciplinary ventures and collaborative working, enabling both academics and students to achieve great things here. Our nine Schools are equivalent in size to faculties at many other UK universities.

The role of the Director of School Operations (DoSO) is crucial within our senior leadership community, and in developing and delivering a roadmap to shape our workforce and the future skills we require; move to a digital first service model; continuously challenge current state and improve delivery and efficiency; and develop a ‘without borders’ Professional Service that supports interdisciplinary academic activity across the institution.

The postholder reports to the Executive Director of Faculty Operations and will work in close partnership with the academic Vice-Dean and Head of School to develop and deliver the School strategy and ensure that academic and Professional Services priorities are aligned.

This is a generic appointment to a Director of School Operations position and the postholder should expect to move to different Schools across the University as required. Lateral movement within the cohort (moving between Schools and Faculties) to build breadth of experience as part of the career pathway will be proactively planned and facilitated.
