Job description

Coin and join our team as a Dog Section Trainer with Operational Support.

If you have the right skills and qualifications to deliver instruction on all aspects of Police Dog Handling to both Novice and Operational Police Dog Handlers then this may be the role for you

The role of Dog Section Trainer is to offer support to Dog Section Officers in the training of new police dogs and to ensure professional competence is maintained through ongoing training of current handlers and dogs. This ensures we can provide specialist resources to incidents of varying natures across Derbyshire.

Flexibility is important as the role may require weekend and evening working.

The role clearly impacts massively on home and family life and as such it is essential that applicants discuss the expected implications with all family members likely to be affected.

What you’ll be doing

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering various dog training courses throughout the year as well as the selection and acquisition of suitable replacement dogs.
  • You will be required to take novice dogs home and care for them/exercise them appropriately. In recompense a Dog Handler’s allowance will be paid accordingly.  A kennel will be supplied for use at home and the use of an unmarked Police Vehicle made available for the transport of dogs. It is expected that the vehicle will be kept at the candidate’s home address. (The allowance and van will only be available at such times that a novice dog is being taken home).
  • You will also plan training schedules and write specific training programmes to ensure handlers meet the required hours and skill level.
  • You will maintain training records, submit reports and ensure the training hours for the team are met.

The must haves

  • Previous dog handling and working in a Police dog training environment.
  • Hold an NPCC qualification in General Purpose Police Dog Instruction and Specialist Police Dog Instruction.
  • Experience in training with operational dogs.
  • To be trained at Force basic driver level or above.
