At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That's why we we're looking for someone talented, someone determined, someone like you.

What will I be doing?

Without any government funding, the Philanthropy directorate plays a significant role in securing the donations Cancer Research UK needs to fund our vital research.

The Donor Relations Specialist works in close collaboration with the principal and major gift team, senior leadership and volunteers to develop and deliver a world-class cultivation, engagement and stewardship programme to attract, engage, recognise, thank and demonstrate impact to donors and drive income.

This is an exciting time to join the CRUK philanthropy team, as we prepare to launch an ambitious multi-million-pound fundraising campaign this year.

Key duties include:

  • Work in close collaboration with Donor Relations Senior Manager to develop the £1m+ stewardship strategy for the directorate, drawing on donor insight and external trends.

  • Build relationships with a range of senior internal and external stakeholders and influence as necessary to ensure the successful delivery of strategic initiatives which support the Principal Giving programme.

  • Oversee donor communications from CRUK leadership for the directorate.

  • Use experience and expert knowledge to plan, delivery and monitor comprehensive cultivation, engagement and stewardship activity.

  • Proactively collaborate with fundraisers to develop robust supporter journeys and make strategic recommendations based on direction and insight. This will include working closely with colleagues in the campaign team, research information, events, communications and PR.

  • Develop and refine the Donor Relations processes for gift confirmations, agreements, acknowledgements, pledge monitoring, recognition, and recording of donor intent. Ensure protocols are in line with department and team priorities and strategies.

  • Oversee the delivery of stewardship commitments to demonstrate impact and educate and inspires further philanthropic support. These include thanking, gift agreements, impact reporting, recognition, events and press & PR.

  • Write, edit, and proof relevant donor communications and stewardship materials such as impact reports.

  • Identify potential opportunities to engage donors and prospects and lead on the development and implementation of regular touchpoints. This will include monitoring media plans and being familiar with wider engagement activity across the philanthropy team and organisation such as Cancer Grand Challenges.

  • Contribute to cross Philanthropy Directorate initiatives, strategy development and other activity and working groups where appropriate.

  • Seek out opportunities to lead specific initiatives and discrete projects as they arise as part of campaign activity and broader cultivation and engagement strategy.

What skills are we looking for?

  • Significant experience and in-depth understanding of principal gift fundraising and stewardship, with a record of securing or stewarding gifts at the £500k+ level.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and accountability and to be a strong team player.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills including experience in writing and managing the development of funding proposals and stewardship reports for a principal gift audience.

  • Outstanding track record of managing complex projects including the ability to work effectively on numerous projects simultaneously.

  • Experience of working with senior stakeholders including executive staff, board members and principal gift volunteers.

  • Excellent strategic thinking with an ability to manage and execute long-term projects that can drive change.

  • Highly organised and proficient in Microsoft Office package and experience and knowledge of fundraising databases.

  • Ability to build relationships with key staff across the department and directorate to maintain effectiveness in role.

  • Highly professional, flexible and committed to going above and beyond the remit of the role to achieve and exceed targets. Prepared to take on a wide variety of tasks.
