Job description

INTERNAL VACANCY ONLY
Can you respond to issues and challenges calmly? Are you experienced in coordinating operational teams?
About us
When New Hall opens in May, Locomotion will become home to one of the largest collections of heritage rail vehicles in the world, heralding a new exciting phase in the museum’s history. Located in the world’s first railway town, Locomotion tells the story of the past, present and future of the railways, featuring such as icons as the locomotive that opened the Stockton & Darlington Railway, the mighty prototype Deltic engine, and the ‘Journey Shrinker’, the world’s fast diesel locomotive. We also want to deliver an amazing visitor experience, and our Visitor Experience team are integral to this.
To support the team, we are recruiting for a full time Duty Manager to play a key role in upholding our standards and ensuring our visitors have a fantastic experience.
About the role
As Duty Manager, you will act as a floor-based operational manager delivering daily Museum operations, co-ordinating responses to a range of issues and liaising with colleagues to provide a seamless standard of visitor experience and care. You will have responsibility for ensuring the smooth and efficient operations including the enjoyment, security, experience, well-being and Health and Safety of the Museum visitors, staff and contractors. You will also act as an incident controller, responsible for overseeing and co-ordinating responses to operational problems that arise in the Museum when the public are involved. Liaising with colleagues from the Retail team also falls within your remit to ensure that our retail operation runs smoothly and efficiently and is best placed to meet visitor needs.
Download the Vacancy Information Pack file under ‘Attachments’ on this vacancy listing on the Science Museum Group website for more details about the role and the application process.
About you
With experience of working in a busy, visitor-focussed environment, you will be an excellent communicator, able to lead by example and manage teams effectively. With a positive approach to a range of situations and challenges, you will use your initiative to co-ordinate responses during incidents, ensuring that visitor safety and enjoyment is at the forefront of all decision making.
Don’t feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn’t match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
What we offer
Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We understand that work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we offer the perks listed below, as well as support for things that happen in life such as parental and adoption leave, sickness, and career breaks.
  • Support with personal and professional development
  • 27 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays

  • Enhanced contributory pension
  • Unmind App and other wellbeing support
  • Interest-free loans
  • Days Out discounts
