JOB DESCRIPTION
DUTY PORTER

Temporary position potentially for up to 12 months

POSITION: Part time and during term time only
5.30 pm – 9.30 pm Thursday & Friday
6.30 pm – 8.30 pm alternate Saturdays

REPORTING TO: Facilities Manager

Epsom College is a co-educational day and boarding school with approximately 1100 pupils aged 11-18. The College is located approximately one mile from Epsom town, below Epsom Downs, in fine buildings set in a beautiful tree filled campus of some 80 acres. Originally founded by The Royal Medical Benevolent Foundation, today the College strives to develop the individual talents of every girl and boy. Pupils are prepared for life beyond the College with an assured set of values and with the belief that they can make a difference in society. Highest standards of excellence in academic work and co-curricular activities are expected, but equally valued is the development of the pupils into independent responsible adults with a purpose and an understanding of the benefits of contributing to their community.

The Department
The Facilities Department comprises Porters, Matrons, Laundry, Domestic Assistants and Reception staff, who all report into the Facilities Manager. Working alongside the Facilities Manager is the Assistant Facilities Manager.

The Post
The function of this position is to provide a high quality and efficient Duty Porter service within the Facilities department of the College. The role will be front facing dealing with visitors, staff & pupils, facilities requests, room set ups and include the lock up and securing of the college at the end of the school day. The job will involve direct liaison with all College staff and an emphasis on excellent communication and customer services skills as well as the ability to deal with unexpected occurrences in an efficient and professional manner.

Main Duties

  • To carry out any daily duties as requested by the Facilities Manager or designate.
  • To be familiar with the college’s week's events calendar to appreciate what events are happening and where these events are taking place to ensure effective communications throughout.
  • To assist in ensuring, through effective communication with the appropriate people, that any additional requests are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the individual or department concerned. e.g. setting up/ breaking down room settings and moving furniture.
  • To ensure that all tasks within your area of responsibility are completed to the required standard.
  • To ensure that all areas on the lock up procedure are secured at the end of the school day, setting alarms as required, report any areas of noncompliance.
  • To be aware of the security requirements and the implications of strangers on campus, be prepared to challenge individuals.
  • Report any security breaches and compile security reports as necessary.
  • To report any defects and remove from service any defective items.
  • To be of smart appearance and appropriately dressed in the uniform provided.
  • To be aware of responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
  • To undertake duties in accordance with safeguarding procedures and protocols
  • To adhere to relevant regulations. i.e. Fire Safety, Manual Handling, C.O.S.H.H. etc.
  • To attend all mandatory and relevant training as required.
  • To adopt a flexible approach to the role and undertake any other reasonable task as requested. i.e. internal/ external events and car parking.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: A total salary of £5,024 per annum based on the working arrangement below inclusive of statutory holiday entitlement.

Hours: The role is during term time only (34 weeks per year including Inset)

The hours for this particular role will be
5.30 pm – 9.30 pm – Thursday & Friday
6.30pm – 8.30pm alternate Saturdays

Holidays: Statutory holiday entitlement provided and is to be taken during the published College holidays.

Pension: The College operates the Epsom College Automatic Enrolment Scheme. The Scheme is administered by the Pensions Trust. Eligibility is based on statutory criteria. If eligible, the Employee will be required to contribute a minimum of 5% of Basic Salary and the College will contribute 4% in compliance with current legislation

Offer: The post will be offered subject to receipt of satisfactory written references, pre-placement medical assessment, proof of appropriate qualifications, a check of online search engines and websites of publicly available information that does not identify the candidate as potentially unsuitable to work within a school setting, a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and overseas police check if appropriate, as well as confirmation that the successful candidate is able to work in the UK.
Prior to interview, an online search of internet search engines, websites and other publicly available and accessible platforms to ascertain applicant’s suitability to work within a school environment will be undertaken on candidates that have been shortlisted. Please note whilst the Enhanced DBS check will be paid by the College if an overseas police check is required it will be at the cost of the successful applicant
