This role is vital in delivering a best-in-class customer service experience to all of our clients. The security team makes sure appropriate actions are taken to reduce the risk of incidents and maintain services, to avoid any impact to the customer’s set up.

It’s a job that involves a lot of teamwork; everyone relies on and helps each other to do the best job possible for our business customers. You’ll have a lot going on at once and can be managing lots of complex workloads and competing priorities. But we’ll work with you to make sure you can manage it.

What you’ll be doing

You'll be joining a security team that supports our government customers and will be developing your career pathway working with a diverse and multi-disciplinary Engineering team. The Cyber Assurance team are essential in testing and assuring we deliver with the quality levels our customers have come to expect from us.

  • You’ll be designing and implementing approaches to test and assure brand new concepts in security software and infrastructure proving they are delivered with a high level of quality, security or performance, with an automate-first ethos
  • You’ll be working with specialists in their area (such as software / infrastructure / systems engineers, data scientists, etc) to deliver high quality solutions for our customers
  • You’ll use Agile ways of working when verifying and validating the quality of everything from small proof of concepts through to national and international scale solutions
  • You’ll gain skills and knowledge in quality assurance, automation, continuous delivery/integration, test driven development, software, networks, high speed processing systems and many more.
  • You’ll research new techniques and technologies to aid the assurance activities.

“Hi, I’m Claire, a software engineer at BT in the Cyber Assurance department. I joined the company in 2021 on the software graduate scheme and have since continued my career as a full time employee with BT. Since joining, I have been part of two different project teams, helping to build bespoke security platforms using a wide range of technologies, including Python, JavaScript and Ansible. This includes interacting with customers on a daily basis, helping to solve challenging and exciting problems. There are a wide range of training opportunities available, and we are encouraged to complete qualifications in relevant areas that we are interested in. This means that I have gained experience and certifications in a range of technical skills, and even had the chance to go to a convention in Las Vegas! I really enjoy being part of a very supportive and friendly team, working with fascinating customers and getting the opportunity to help protect the UK’s critical national infrastructure.”

“Hi, my name is Louise, and I am a Software Engineer at BT. In 2022, I did a summer placement here at BT in which I joined a team working on the data collection and analysis of the Border Gateway Protocol. What I really appreciated from the internship is that BT considered my background as a Maths student when deciding the project I would be assigned to. The project not only allowed me to apply the knowledge I had learned through my degree, but also develop my practical skills in programming and soft skills through collaborative teamwork and presenting a summary of my work at the end of the internship. After such a positive experience with the internship, I then returned to BT in September 2023 as a Software Engineer. In this role so far, I've had the opportunity to significantly improve my programming skills, explore new concepts previously unfamiliar to me, and have consistent support along the way. I chose to come back to BT because not only does it provide a supportive and caring environment, but also offers engaging work that both challenges me and allows me to advance my skills across a multitude of areas.”

The skills & experience you’ll need

The role is also subject to you gaining and keeping the necessary level of security clearance needed to undertake your work. The result of the security clearance vetting is not subject to appeal. Failure to successfully achieve and maintain the necessary level of security clearance may see any offer of employment with BT cease or withdrawn.

We will also be looking for the following:

• A 2.2 degree or higher in a relevant STEM subject.

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

• Strong communication skills.

• Strong IT skills.

• The ability to simplify complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Desired but not essential:

• Knowledge or experience of contact centre, video, collaboration, or voice technologies

Due to the sensitive nature of this role you will be required to have DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum will be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.
