The role
As a EC&I Discipline Lead, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to head up our Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering Discipline within our Mission Systems business area. Mission Systems enables our customers to deliver their mission, through our products and solutions, using intelligence and analysis and delivering critical communication services.

Day to day, you'll be the driving force across our Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering Discipline. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering for UK Mission Systems, you will lead and manage the EC&I Discipline defining its top-level strategies in both resource and capability, providing effective direction and guidance to managers across the discipline.

  • Define the strategy of the Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering Discipline, while managing resources in a safe, secure, and cost-efficient manner, and ensuring consistency with the Engineering strategy.
  • Be the leader that engages and inspires colleagues, promoting a positive working culture that ensures a diverse and inclusive environment that encourages continuous improvement and personal development of team members.
  • Be the main contact point for all EC&I Engineering Managers and be the face of the discipline for both Senior external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure the discipline maintains its technical capability, delivering critical skills and resources aligned to business requirements and integrated technical programmes.
  • Develop and maintain the Discipline's performance metrics, procedures, processes, and systems and of a quality that delivers against Business and Customer requirements.
  • Mentor and support engineers across the discipline, ensuring their career progression in line with engineering our solutions.


This role is full time, Monday to Friday and will be based at our Ashton House, Bristol site one to two days per week with hybrid working from home arrangements. There is a requirement for attending face-to-face meetings across a range of internal and customer sites across the UK.

Essential experience of the EC&I Discipline Lead:

  • You will be a motivated and inspirational leader that has had previous experience of people management within a complex or large organisation and have a people-centred approach that encourages communication, training, mentorship, best practice, and delivery of the teams' goals.
  • You will have led and managed multi-disciplinary technical teams.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading transformation and change whilst driving delivery, performance, and continuous improvement within an Engineering Discipline.
  • Show financial and commercial awareness, have managed budgets and resources of large teams and programmes previously.
  • Whilst this role is not a technical position, you will be experienced within the EC&I Discipline and be able to demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

Qualifications for the EC&I Discipline Lead:

  • You will be educated to degree level with Electrical / Electronic engineering.
  • We value difference and don't have a fixed idea when it comes to background, provided you can show the required level of leadership experience and impact. Chartered Engineer status, ideally at Fellow level, would be beneficial as validity of your engineering competence.


The successful candidate must be able to achieve BPSS and SC security clearance for this role.
